remove/replace keyboard aspire 5742

Got some lousy advice from Keyboard World, their "similar-to" tutorial just says remove the battery and pry off the keyboard. Pretty sure it's broken now . . . later I noticed a slot on the side with the letter "k" on a lock-shaped icon. Not sure what it does . . .

BTW my problems started with the cursor drifting backward occasionally, then I'd get multiple (random) characters appearing after entering single keystrokes, finally just random gibberish, no action had any predictable result.

If I can clean the fan (it had chronic overheating problems, even using an outboard cooling fan) and replace the keyboard myself it might be worth it, but does anyone know of a reliable source for info? Acer makes about a million models, it's tough to find anything specific.

Thanks for reading,

s.

God, what a useless forum. Look down the list and it's "replies: zero. Replies: zero. Replies: zero" forever. Then someone gets 7000 views and one useless answer. BTW thanks Acer for providing a 2000+ page user guide, now I know that if I'm going to a meeting and my battery is fully charged, I might not  need to bring an adapter but if it's a long meeting, and my laptop's not fully charged, I might have to. Very informative, I can't wait to read the next thousand pages. How do I replace the **bleep**ing keyboard?
