M5800 shuts down just after loading into windows

I have a M5800 that turns on just fine, and loads Windows Vista with no issues.  I have not really used this computer maybe less than 200 hours total running time, but now have a need for it.  About a minute or so after sitting at the Windows desktop, it shuts down as if the plug was pulled out.  It also takes a while for me to be able to restart it, but the same thing happens again.

I did take the side case off, and blew out any dust in there, checked for loose connections and all that.  Everything looks good.  When I restarted it again with the side case off, I noticed that once it shuts down, the large CPU fan will run at a lower setting.

I assume it's thinking it overheated, but I can't imagine that since all fans work at full power up until it shuts down, and it simply hasn't done much real work outside of starting up in order to generate a lot of heat.

Ideas?

    Hi jwarden!

It sounds like your PC's power supply may have an issue. They are cheap enough to buy these days, and try to go for a similar (or greater) wattage to the one that's already there.

One other thing - has the graphics card been changed from the original? If so, it may be too powerful for your existing power supply.

Either way, it looks as if a new one is needed. You can always see if you can "borrow" a supply from someone and try it in your PC, then that way, you'll know for sure!

Good idea, I hadn't considered that being that the machine has been used so little.  I'll try swapping one out and see how that goes.

I assume that putting in something thats more powerful won't do any harm as the machine will only draw what it needs?

Yeah, correct! It will only draw what it needs.

    Good luck!
