For months now, Windows Vista SP2 crashes, reporting a Nvidia driver problem. Reinstallation of the latest drivers doesn't work. System information shows Nvidia driver as 9.18.13.2723. Programs list Graphic Driver 327.23/3D vision controller driver 326.01/PhysX system software 9.13.0725.  Nvidia support suggested bios update but can't access downloads. Acer can autodetect SN (but won't recognize) and there is apparently no SNID

That is because it's not an Acer, but a Gateway and you need to use the Gateway site for drivers.

    Gateway FX530 Drivers page

Please note that this is an older system and drivers have not been updated in some time.

Have you uninstalled the drivers for the 8800GTX completely and attempted to reinstall?

Gateway support directs to Acer.  Drivers reinstalled many times.  Nvidia suggested BIOS update but this isn't a listed option on the support link

Is this the card that shipped in the system or an upgrade that you are attempting to perform?

Sysyem original.  Working fine until June.  Nvidia thinks its latest drivers require a BIOS update

Drivers do not require a BIOS update.  That's an excuse on NVidia's part, because they don't know what else to tell you.

If the card has been working fine to this point, but suddenly stops working, it will be either software related or hardware related.  To eliminate software, you roll back to the drivers that you were using when it was working.  Don't use the newer drivers.  If the system still fails to work properly, it could be hardware related, which means you would need to contact your local service center for assistance.
