what to do?

Let me start with some details. My daughter was given a  Acer Aspire One Netbook for a school tutoring program she completed back in about 2009. We were not given any manuals, warranty, etc info. We did register It.  worked well until about 2011 when it wouldn't boot up at all. (warranty expired) I had finally fixed the black screen/blue screen problems along with booting with flashing the bios with a bootable usb tool ( unabootin, flash.it , ?)  I have finally came to the conclusion that it is a software issue. I get the following error no matter what I do, such as safe mode, safe mode with command prompts, chkdsk,  \windows\system32\config\system.
So what I need to do is reinstall software, recover data, repair, etc. All of which I need to do by either by USB or an external hard drive. This won't be possible due to the fact that when I hit  f12,  I don't see my usb any more so I thought  if I went  into bios to add or enable this would fix it. Now I don't have the Bios password written down. Thankfully I do have all  OS password/admin passwords, daughters passwords. I do Have an oem windows XP with key. I have a windows XP recovery console disc that I am researching how to make usb bootable. I Also have a Erecovery.exe to do the same.

Thanks.

Bear, I'm afraid yhat you're a lot smarter than I am.

But if you go into All Programs, you should find a folder named "Acer" with an owner's manual.
