How can I change my DNS ethernet suffix (seems to bypass the auto-DNS internet connection setting)

My laptop seems to revert to a specific DNS suffix of a US Educational Institution each time I connect to the internet, despite the auto-DNS internet connection setting specified. Years ago I used the laptop when I travelled abroad to this specific US Institution and accessed the internet via a specific ethernet connection assigned from their servers.

Is there a way to reset the DNS suffix?

It sounds like this is not a DNS issue, but a VPN connectivity issue.

If you are no longer using the VPN connection that is reconnecting you to the "US Educational Institution," remove the VPN connection.
