Acer 5420-5038 fan and battery dilemma

I have an Acer 5420-5038 laptop with Vista 32. That came with a TM00741 11.1V 4400maH battery that served me well but lost its strength. I bought another battery, GRAPE 32 5200maH that I used for a long time +/- 10 months and still have the TM00741. When the GRAPE32 was in the laptop about four months ago, the fan came on when the cover was closed and the laptop was heated up in my laptop sleeve I enclosed it in after walking home with it in my backpack. I think I opened the cover and pressed the power button to shut it down. This laptop is still working and I am using it right now to compose this message. Just now the fan came on when the computer was asleep with the cover closed with the TM00741 inside. The TM00741 is installed right now with the adapter plugged in and the fan is working properly. In power options I set everything to indefinite with no time limit to stay on so the computer will not go to sleep on battery power. When I set the computer to sleep and close the lid, the fan sometimes turns on. At other times when I set the computer to sleep with the lid open, it would go into hibernation and would not turn on with the power switch pressed and held with no indicator lights on. I used my multi-tester and found different battery voltages on the two batteries. On the GRAPE32 two points on the 7 terminal read about 11.34V. One was the last pin, pin 7. The common was the first pin and positive and the voltages were negative. The maximum voltages I got from the TM00741 were 6.95 negative and they were on pins 5 and 6 to reference pin 1 positive. Does anyone know if the battery is at fault? Can I run some kind of a systems diagnostics?
