Aspire v3-531 shuts down unexpectedly

I've just a few days ago bought a brand new Aspire v3-531. It's running Windows 8 64 bit.

I like to leave my laptop on all the time, but most mornings I wake up to find the laptop has turned itself off in the night, for no apparent reason.

Anyone got any ideas how I can stop this from happening?

Thanks.

Right, well I've just moments ago been using my laptop, and all of a sudden the screen went crazy.

The whole screen went from normal, to about 20% remaining normal, and the remaining 80% being a load of flashing, multicoloured, horizontal rectangles. Hundreds of the things. I had to do a hard reset.

Great. I took out a credit card to buy this, and it's presumably going to have to be returned?

How the hell am I supposed to return it now that it's filled with my passwords, personal information, etc etc?

This is unacceptable. I am furious.

Yes. you are most likely to need to return the unit for service or replacement.

To protect your passwords, you have a couple of options.  You could return the computer for service first removing the hard drive, since it seems unlikely that the hard drive or the system installed thereon would liely cause such a fault (much more likely to be a faulty motherboard, or perhaps BIOS).  The second option is to temporarily remove the hard drive, install it in an external enclosure and back up your files from this HD BEFORE you format the hard drive (since the service would likely reformat the hard drive anyway).

And by the way, such a thing can happen to any computer at any time.  I have some experience with rather more expensive IBM & Lenovo ThinkPads, which I find great, but also with their at times weird problems.

    Does that help?

Thankyou for your kind response and your advice.

I'm furious because for years I've been using,,, no, TOLERATING, an ancient laptop running XP, which has 4 keys missing and overheats every hour or so because the CPU fan is faulty. i finally gave up with it, took out a credit card and bought the aspire. I was so excited. For about five minutes.

The build quality immediately felt terrible. The touchpad is close to unusable if like me, you need it to be precise, for photoshop work, The machine is abysmal. It's worse than the 12yo HP i'm using right now to post this, which is running ununtu with a keyboard which is almost unusable and a fan so bad im not sure i'll even be able to finish this post before it shuts down, yet again.

The first day i had the v3-531, it began to malfunction. Shutting down at random times, blackscreening and freezing after sleepmode, etc etc, now this.

I'll never buy from Acer again as long as I live. I recommend you all follow suit. I know we'ew in the middle of a global financial crisis, but this thing feels and acts like it was built by demented chimps on LSD. It'a inexcusable.

Tomorrow I'm returning it to the store, after I've DBAN'd the HDD. If they won't accept a return for any reason, I'll make a youtube video of me SHOOTING the f*****g thing, just to get my point accross, and to help others avoid this NIGHTMARE.

In short, I was ripped off. Fine, all PC's are prone to problems and many will want to argue that this was a one off... but no. This is simply a bad build, everything, EVERYTHING about this machine screams "cheap", nothing works as it should, quite simply, I hate it, I hate the dire customer 'support', and I shall do my best to inform the world of this fact via every forum i can find.

Sort it out, Acer. You're not getting away with it any longer.

....still, thankyou appsdev for your kind response. I'm off to get my money back, or get my shotgun and camcorder out.
