Hard drive Replacement, Gateway FX6831 (Win7, 64-bit)

After receiving SMART popup of probable hard drive failure, I immediately backed up up my data and made a repair disk.  I ordered and insalled an exact replacement, Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, 1500GB. Using Acronis True Image, all information was transferred to the new hard drive, and all seemed well - until I tried Windows update.  I cannot get this vital update to function.  I've tried several update problem solutions from Microsoft,  e.g., Mr Fixit...  Win repair,  I will get a prompt that the problem wa solved, but when I try to access Windows update, I repeatedly get the message "Win update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running.  Your may need to restart your computer".  Re-starts result in the same messages.

I also cannot activate MS Security essentials.

Run "services.msc" and make sure that both Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update services are started. These are both needed to do an update.

If they are then there may be an activation issue, sometimes new hardware can do that. If that is the issue then run slui.exe 4 and find the number to call. Have the Windows 7 product key available.

Padgett - Thank you for a quick response - (actually this post should have been in "desktops"), but your suggestion addresses the problem.

When I checked Bckground Intelligent Transfer Svc, it initially showed started (delayed start).  I restarted it, and the "delayed start" went away, but as it showed "Manual" for start, I changed it to auto.

Windows update was likewise started (been there before), but altho it says auto, it also shows (delayed).  Restarted it also, then tried to do a Win update, but unfortunately w/same result.

My Win 7 came pre-installed, so I'm not sure I can recover a product key.

Padgett - Thank you for your response and suggestion.  There seems to be a problem across most of MS applications. When I attempted what you suggested, neither had any positive result.  The slui.exe 4 procedure got me to a MS webpage that gave me a message 'This site is not available at this time, please try again later".  I consistently got this message over the past week.

    This problem persists.
