Aspire 5742 project

Starting a new project with a Aspire 5742-7653 lappy. This unit came with no HAD, an I5-460M

core, 4 gigs of Kingston ram, and a failing battery. Bought it off eBay for probably too much

money, but not too bad.

So my project consists of a more powerful core which is now an I5-560M, 8 gigs of G Skill ram, a 500

gig WD Scorpio Black HD, a Intel 5300 WIFI card, a new Anker Direct battery and a detailed cleaning

inside and out. After breaking it down it was found to have all sorts of dust and debris lodged in the

cooling radiator and fan easy as well as some debris on the mb. Cleaned all with 70 % alcohol and

blew dry with a reversed vacuum cleaner I modified which blows the heck out of things.

After cleaning the unit the 460M was pulled and a 560M was installed which I had bought off eBay

used. I seated the core and used Gelid GC-Extreme thermal compound for the paste. It seems to

cool a bit better than Arctic 5 Silver and doesn't require a cure period. It has been mentioned

that these units have cooling problems so that is what I'll be working on to see if I can discover

a way to drop temps besides dropping core power usage percentage down to 80 or 90 %.

Haven't got the ram yet as it's still on the USPS truck somewhere so it's running on the 4 gigs

but is very stable with the 560M. The new HD is with the new ram so I'm using an old 80 gig 5400

spinner to test with after loading W7 Pro 64 bit on it.

So far things are running really well and as new parts get installed, and configured, I'll update.

I can't seem to leave things alone. I have two other Acer lappy's. The 5315 has been updated to

a T-8100 Duo Core 2 core from the old Celeron single core, a Samsung 128 SSD Drive, Intel 4965G

WIFI card, and 3 gigs of G Skill ram, and runs crazy fast as well as runs at 36-40 C all day long.

The 7520 is a different story. It has an AMD Turion 64 dual core up from a 58, a WD Black Scorpio

HD, 4 gigs of G Skill ram, a ATI 3560M graphics card, an Intel 4965G WIFI Card and a new Anker

Direct battery. It is not as cool running as the 5315, but I have never really been a fan of AMD

cores in lappys. It runs better than it did, but not up to my expectations so I'll do a bit more

work on it.

I really like working on Acers and prefer them over other laptops.

Anyway, that's where I'm at now.

Thanks for reading !
