Janet, MS puts suspicious files in "Protected View." You might have opened this file from a suspicious website. Your computer might have detected a virus in the file. So how do you get to the file?

    1) You might have set up Word to ban all files from Protected View.

    2) You might not be using an administrator account.

    3) Supposedly, though, there is an option to exit Protected View on your task bar.

Before reading the next part, by aware that this is a Microsoft software problem, not an Acer hardware problem. Microsoft recommends that you DO NOT disable Protected View. You might be better off deleting the file unopened. But if you insist on doing something MS urges you not to do, upgrade your anti-virus program first, and then here goes:

By default Office 2010 will open documents in protected mode that fail validation, have been downloaded from the internet, are located in potentially unsafe location and include attachments. Protected view opens the document in read-only mode thus minimizing the exposure to some potential security threat.

If you are an experienced user who is annoyed by the protected view, you can always disable it even though it is not recommended by Microsoft.

Open MS Word 2010, go to File Menu(Office Backstage) and select Options. Select Trust Center from the left sidebar and then click Trust Center Settings button in the main window. Now in Trust Center dialog window, select Protected View from the left sidebar and disable protected view for any desired option.

    Vince,

Thank you very much for your help. I am not a computer guru in any way so my next question is (and I am sorry to bother you):

If I set up Word to ban all files from Protected View I did it by mistake, how can I change that?

    Thank you,

    Janet

Janet, I use a different word processor, so I can't find it myself. When you are blocked by Protected View, there should be a button somewhere on the screen that allows you to read the document anyway, but you can't edit it. But Word shouldn't be putting everything into Protected View. It only stops suspicious documents.
