My notebook fails to power up sometimes

My Acer 5420-5038 notebook fails to power up sometimes. I have vista os and avast free antivirus. Tonight I removed the battery and held the power switch down and reinstalled the battery and it powered on. The problem started in the library about a year ago when I think I put the computer to sleep and closed the lid before it entered sleep mode and removed the external power plug also before it settled into sleep mode. When I opened my backpack I think at home about 30 minutes later, the fan of the computer was running and the computer was hot so it did not enter sleep mode. When I set the computer to sleep these days by closing the lid it goes into hibernation mode in about 30 minutes and sometimes it will not start up after pressing the power switch. Even if I click sleep from the screen and close the lid it still goes into hibernation after a while and may not start up. Power options is set to never sleep and never hibernate. The power adapter is OK and the battery charges OK. The hard drive is ok I guess. If there is a hardware issue what is your guess and is it fixable? This computer is about three years old and I have no warranty and support from Acer. I am using this computer right now to post this. Best Buy geek squad wants $70 for diagnostics and more for parts if needed and I am not using them for now. I wild guess is that somehow the computer can't determine what is battery power and adapter power when both are being used.
