I recently purchased a refurbished netbook and tried to register it, but when I entered the serial number, the website told me that the product was already registered. What should I do?

Don't register online. Call Acer and they'll be able to override the registration. It might not help though, if I remember correctly you are covered by the original owners warranty. Assuming the unit would still have a couple months of it's warranty remaining you would get that couple months, but if the unit was out of warranty before you bought it you'd still be out now.

Becky, the answer depends on what brand and model you bought.

The problem here is that the manufacturer does not know that you really paid for the laptop; they're afraid you might have stolen it. With some companies, the original owner must contact the company to transfer the registration. Sometimes you have to talk to them on the telephone, sometimes you can talk to customer service, and sometimes you have to go to the warranty department. By selling the laptop, the owner voided any warranties still in effect.

Depending on your model, these instruction will change the owner's name to you. But the manufacturer still might not want to let you register.

Enter your system's registry editor. You can do so by clicking \"Start\" and  typing \"regedit\" in the search box.

      • 2

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\Current  Version in the registry.

3 Double-click \"RegisteredOwner\" in the right window pane and change the  value to the desired name.

4 Restart your computer and the changes will take effect. The registered name  will be changed on your computer.
