Acer 5740 Hard drive upgrade

Hi everyone,

I have an Aspire 5740 with Windows 7. I am trying to upgrade the HD. I installed the HD and used the recovery disk to install the Windows. It all seemed to install properly until Windows starts up for the first time. During "Startup is applying system setting" I received this error," Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computers hardware."  Any ideas to get this HD to work with this laptop? The HD is a Seagate 7200 with 500GB SATA with 3G/s and 16mb cache.

Martin, that's a nice machine you have there, and it gets good reviews--until they get to the hard drive. The original hard drive does all its tasks well, except for big downloads. It did them successfully, but at a slow speed, and I wonder if that isn't why you bought a better hard drive.

Unfortunately, the drivers on your recovery disk are not designed for your new hard drive. And the rest of your machine might not be able to support the better-quality hard drive that you bought. MAYBE you can download the new drivers from the manufacturer or even from Acer.

My advice? For what you paid, you got your money's worth. I would go back to the original hard drive.

I bought the new HD because the old drive is too small and too slow. I was expecting the problem to be the driver, but I can't install the driver before I install the restore disks and I can't install them after?  I would think there is a way to install the drivers.
