Does this happen with both shift keys or only one?

Janus, I looked up that 3-year old rig of yours, and the best one-word description is "rugged."

Here are some suggestions. Unplug the laptop and remove the battery first. If you're not a geek, you might want to let a repair shop try these:

    1) Go to Control Panel-Accessibility and turn off Sticky Keys.

    2) Surprisingly, you should try plugging in a regular keyboard to see if the problem continues. (It might, which means that it is not a hardware problem).

    3) Use Device Manager to ensure that you have the latest drivers.

    4) Try to pry the key off and clean underneath it.

    5) Replace the entire keyboard, which doesn't cost as much as you would think.

Thanks for the reply.  All of a sudden today I'm able to use the caps and symbols again.  I appreciate your suggestion for the future.
