Revo RL80 graphics

I am thinking of buying a RL80 to play back recorded TV. At the moment I only record in SD which it should handle without a problem. However what I want to know is if I upgrade to HD recording does the graphics chip support H264 video acceleration? The graphics chip is just described as "Intel HD" so cannot check the spec. A customer review I read said that it only supported MPEG2.

The Revo RL80 shipped with two different configurations, the Intel HM70 and HM77.

Both include "Intel HD" graphics in the chipset, one with HD3000 and one with HD4000.

If you look on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units

it shows that the HD3000 and HD4000 both support Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV).

Hopefully, that provides you with enough information to make an informed decision.

    Thanks for the info.

With Nvidia or AMD graphics chipsets you know what you are getting but Intel is much more difficulty. After much searching I found that the Intel Celeron 887 used in the RL80 is part of the Sandy Bridge family and use the HD2000/3000 graphics. With the info that "Quick Sync" is the Intel Hardware Acceleration feature in question helps matters. The Wiki link given contains the following :- "Quick Sync is built into some Sandy Bridge CPUs, but for example not on some low-end Sandy Bridge Pentiums or Celerons".

The link below which was the source of my original suspicion gives the spec of the Intel Celeron 887 which shows it supporting very few graphics features including NOT supporting “Quick Sync”. Motherboards with the i3 and more powerful processors do support “Quick Sync”

This is why I decided to buy the RL70 version with is lower spec AMD processor but with the important for my application AMD graphics processor which supports hardware acceleration.

A little more information has been forwarded to me:

SandyBridge does not support H.264 HW acceleration (encoder). Does support H.264 decoder.

"SandyBridge does not support H.264 HW acceleration (encoder). Does support H.264 decoder."

Yes but as was stated in an earlier reference that is not the case for ALL Sandy Bridge processors and is not available for processors below the i3 such as the Celeron 887.

Intel HD graphics is a pain! I am glad I bought the L70 with its AMD graphics which definately do h264 hardware acceleration so playing HD video the processor runs at only around 30%.

As far as I am concerned this is closed because I am no longer considering buying the RL80 as I bought a L70 instead.
