Can Your Laptop Last Eight Years?

I don't know, but here's how to try:

1) Don't wait until you're having problems, start doing these things NOW!

2) Don't do stupid things. Keep food and drink away from your laptop, and keep it out of direct sunlight.

3) Keep it cool. Simply elevating it a little will lower the temperature ten degrees. The jury is hung on whether fan coolers underneath are worth it, but they cost a lot less than a new laptop. By the way, scientists have confirmed that if your laptop is in a room where the temperature is ninety degrees, the cooling air will be twenty degrees hotter than if you were in a room where the temperature is seventy degrees. Really.

4) Don't move your laptop while it is on. This heavily-disregarded rule is important.

5) You won't like this one: no high-intensity games unless it's a gaming computer.

6) Download a free program like CoreTemp to keep an eye on your temperature.

7) The less bloatware and spyware you have, the less stress your CPU has. Download the free program Win Patrol to check what starts up with your laptop. DISABLE but do not delete programs you don't want, until you're sure that getting rid of them didn't mess you up.

8) Every few months, blow a short puff of compressed air into the EXIT vent of your fan. If a cloud of dust comes out, do it again. Some fans have a filter that is easily accessible; if so, remove it and clean it carefully.

9) You won't like this one: PROBABLY, you're better off staying with the original operating system. Updating drivers on laptops is much harder than on a desktop. Is your laptop doing what you want it to do? Then you don't need a new OS.

10) Keep it level, and if it isn't level, use cards, etc., to get it level.
