No spdif output from Aspire 5520

Hello all. I recently aquired an Aspire 5520 that I want to use as a dedicated music server using the SPDIF to drive my DAC (digital to analog converter) which feeds my audio amplifier but there is no digital output from this port.

The config is as follows: I've just installed a new HD and loaded a fresh copy of XP SP3. I have tried both the audio drivers from Acer and the newest realtek drivers to no avail. The realtek tray app shows only 48k sampling for the spdif port (is the the highest it can output?) and the spdif volume slider is greyed out in both the realtek app and the native windows sound control mixer panel even though I have enabled it in output devices. I believe it is optical and not coaxial in the 5520 ?  and have played a file and peeked into the black headphone jack but there is no red light indicating that it is outputting digital audio. I know my DAC is ok as it runs fine from my PC. How can I tell if this spdif port is functioning correctly ? Am I missing some small piece of software ? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Ward
