W700P toichscreen goes to sleep

Just got a used W700P from an Amazon seller. Other than the previous owner forgetting to delete his Windows.old folder (along with something like 20GB of data) and needing to have a bunch of drivers installed, it's working well ... except when you aren't using the touchscreen for more than a few seconds the touch function seems to go to sleep and it takes a doubleclick, or maybe just enough clicks, to wake up. Once it's awake I can use it fine, as long as I don't let things sit for more than a few seconds again. Is there a setting I should know about?

Try this: go to device manager (start > run > devmgmt.msc), expand the human interface devices category, right click on (it was the second one for me) USB input device, goto properties, goto the power management tab, and uncheck "turn off this device to save power". This completely fixed the issue for me.

It appears that the tablet is out of warranty (I didn't think the W700 series was old enough to be out of warranty) so I can't ask questions of support. Has anyone seen anything like this? It's driving me crazy! The touch only remains active for three or four seconds, then I have to double tap to wake it back up. Playing Taptiles is a nightmare. :-(

Considering you don't know what settings the previous own adjusted. I'd start by restoring the unit to factory defaults.

Here's an article on how to do with the recovery media: https://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29959/kw/w700%20reload

You can also purchase recovery media from our store if they weren't made available from the original owner: http://store.acer.com

OK, I have it on order. I'll check back in when it arrives, and do a backup of data before the reset...

    [later...]

In the mean time I went into the BIOS and reset everything to defaults with no change to the symptoms.

My W700 also does the same thing..  I thought I was the only one..    The touchscreen seems to "sleep" and you have to tap 1 or 2 times for it to wake up and start registering my touches.

I wish anybody else could comment if they know that this is normal or not?   I have a Surface Pro and it's always ready for touch and instant.

I also notice the accuracy of my touches seem to be a little off but not that big of a deal.

I'm still waiting for my $50 recovery thumb drive so I can restore to factory defaults to see if that will get it working. I owned an EXOPC for close to three years and never saw anything like this, and like you I've used a Surface Pro without the issues. There are a number of HID devices shown in Device Manager, I bellieve the touchscreen is one of those devices and that's it's viewed by the system as USB. Perhaps if we can figure out which device(s) are the ones associated with the touch screen we might be able to change the behavior.

Well I did buy mine used as well, and when I got it, it had NO drivers installed.. Just the basic video card drivers that come with Windows and yeah.. I installed all the drivers from Acer's support site but none of them changed the touchscreen behavior..   I hope we figure it out because it's so annoying..   My cheap $350 Lenovo Lynx Win8 tablet's screen is night and day more responsive than this!

That's actually a great sign if your problem and my problem are both attributable to the PO doing a generic Win8 install without any Acer drivers. That means that it's reasonable to assume the problem is with the generic install and won't be there with the recovery image. :-)

I have the original discs so I'll attempt a fresh restore tonight myself as well..  I'll probably be able to report back to you before you get your USB thumb drive..

How can you get the USB stick to boot when I couldn't even get mine to boot?   I have to go find my external optical drive because i've been reading our bios will only boot from discs and not a usb drive.   I hope they have some magical usb sticks!

I think that did the trick.. But I better give it more time before assuming that was exactly the problem.. I hope i'm not just playing with the device enough that the screen hasn't had time to "fall asleep" yet.  Report back later.

I tested on mine as well, and this seems to be it! The second 'USB Input Device' under Human Interface Devices turns the behavior on and off by selecting the Power Management tab and removing the checkmark from 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.

And my $50 USB System Recovery Drive arrived today, now that I no longer need it. I sure wish Acer had just answered my question when I started this quest instead of telling me I needed the SRD. :-(
