My laptop just won't boot at all since it started automatic updates yesterday and then shut down

    If it is shut down now, try pressing the reset (pin hole next to one of the middle screws on the back) for about 5 seconds then try to reboot.

    thanks I tried that, but it although it moved on from the ACER screen, it went to a completely blank screen, with nothing at all on it.

    Could you see if the blank screen had the backlight on dimly ? On one machine I had a blank screen for over an hour then it came to life. I'd just leave it on overnight and see if anything changes. If not then a full reinstall may be necessary.
