What occured prior to the "touch screen stopped working" ?
Did you update any software or hardware?

i have the same issue, touch screen just stopped working, i bought it brand new w. windows 8 on it on oct 26 and i went into all of the settings but cant find anything possibly turned off

Touch firmware update for Aspire 5600U after upgrading Windows 8 (can only run if current OS is Windows 8)
and new BIOS
BIOS - UEFI for Windows 8 (Not for Upgrades)
it should help.
(you can also go to http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers and there in bios section you have this files
