my laptop shut down despite having plenty of battery power and would not turn back on. When I plugged it in the orange light came on indicating that it was charging. Following the instructions on Acer web page I unplugged the device, held the battery reset button, waited, then plugged in the charger and attempted to reboot my device. Still no luck but now the light will not come one when plugged in. When left plugged in the device is producing heat but no fan is running. How can I turn on my laptop?

Keep the charger plugged in. Then press and hold the power button for 5-10 seconds to make sure the machine is completely off. Release the power button. Then press it again one time to turn the machine back on. What happens? Jack E/NJ

After trying to reset the battery, does the system still seem to heat up plugged in? Jack E/NJ

I have to step away for awhile. So I'm gonna guess it no longer heats up when plugged in. I suspect that when you tried to reset the battery with a paperclip in the pinhole, the spring switch got stuck and didn't fully re-connect battery when you withdrew the paperclip. That's probably why there was no battery charging light.

So remove the charger again and try re-inserting the paperclip into the pinhole for about 5 seconds. Then give the paperclip a couple of taps as you remove it to try to get the spring switch to fully re-connect. Then plug the charger back in. Hopefully the charging light reappears. And try to turn it on again.

Hello. Sorry for being away. The charge light still has not reappeared and the button feels like it has popped back up.

Not good. At best, the battery connector to the mainboard somehow came loose or needs to be re-seated. If no long under warranty, google "e5-574" "disassembly" with the quotes for instructions to get the back cover off and access the battery. The battery and its connector is on the extreme left side viewed from the bottom. If re-seating doesn't work, you may want to try a local shop for a diagnosis. If the cost is too much, you could try to salvage your personal files from the HDD assuming it's OK via a USB port on another computer. Jack E/NJ

I removed the bottom of my laptop and disconnected and reconnected my battery and still no response. Is there something else I should be doing while I have the cover off?

The way it unexpectedly shut down --- now no LEDs lit --- no heat plugged in --- no fan --- no nothing --- suggests you've done about all you can do by re-seating the connectors. If it was mine, I'd probably remove the hard drive and see If I could save my personal files on another computer with a SATA to USB adapter cable (Amazon or Ebay, adapter cables less the $15 with free shipping). Then ask friends or acquaintences for recommendations on a Regina-area shop for a diagnosis & estimate. But if a trustworthy local shop doesn't seem realistic, I might fleetingly consider the out-of-warranty ACER route --- but with the time & cost likely involved I'd probably cut my losses and take a chance on a new laptop from whoever seems to be giving the best deals.  Jack E/NJ
