  • Where did you find that? I just located the service guide for "Aspire 5738G/5738ZG/5738Z/5738/5338 Series Aspire 5536/5536G/5236 Series", which isn't exact, but close, and it corroborates 1066mhz.
  • Thanks much, Sharanji, that was a very thorough answer. Please check out http://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-5736z-4460-15-6-pentium-t4500-windows-7-home-premium-64-bit-3-gb-ram-320-gb-hdd/specs/, where it list pc3-8500, or 1066mhz, as the correct denomination. I don't see specs for the unit on the Acer…
  • A ha. I just found specs at CNet, whiche say pc3-8500. Funny I have a stick of that that doesn't work in the machine, while 12800 does. Need to test further. Any insights would be appreciated.

  • That's a great idea. I'm having permission problems in MSCONFIG. When I try to disable startup items, it says some services couldn't be changed, I need to be on an admin account - which I am. Yet the changes I make seem to stick. Tried a new admin account. I'm running sfc now and will get back here.
  • My first thought also was that the return to the System disk was a normal part of the process. But after it asked me again about the interface language it dropped me onto the top-level menu, asking whether I wanted to do a complete reinstall, retain my settings or exit, period. That to me is an error. If it was picking up…
  • You may need to install the service packs manually in order to use the update site. Also, let it work a long time for the first update.
  • Thanks for your reply. I did test the drive, at least with the short self test, and it passed. I doubt it's that. I strongly suspect this is a driver issue, especially with the last leg of the recovery not proceeding correctly.
