I had that problem with my Aspire R5-571TG and finally had to send it in to have the port replaced. If it's still under warranty, send it in. You can buy new ports on eBay but they have to be soldered onto the motherboard. I am not skilled enough to risk that.

It's always a matter of balancing need with budget. I have stayed with i7s and have been really happy the performance. I would worry more about adequate memory, but that is easily upgraded if it's slow. Also and SSD really speeds things up, also easily done if you need better performance.
