  • What is the difference between a pc card type II, and a type II CardBus PC Card ? Perhaps I do not need to go down the pc card route - I am using the USB memory sticks, and dvd/ rwr disks without any problems. It is just a case of being curious (due to my age and getting used to laptops, Windows XP and Vista) always…
  • Clyde, Success at last. After posting the above I switched off the laptop, and then re-booted, pressing F2. The D2D recovery item was disabled, so I altered that to 'enable'. Looking in Acer Empowering Technonology, and clicking on the e-recovery management, I now have access to that. Seeing as I was exploring e-recovery…
  • Clyde, I have tried the link re "toms hardware", but get the result '404 page not found'. I will have to do a bit more digging and searching.
  • Clyde, Thank you for that reply and the information. I will have a look at what you suggest later today. And,hopefully, come back and thank you for a positive result.
  • It seemed that NTI BackupNow 4 was corrupted. There was also NTI 7 installed on this XP laptop, and although I could enter NTI 7 and its sub -menus they would not work correctly, so it looked as though that program, too, was corrupted - possibly from when I crashed the laptop. I have since removed both programs.
  • laurent_14, I will have a look at your link out of curiosity. But I am thinking that I no longer need NTI Backup Now 4, since I am using Macrium Refelect satisfactorily, and that updating/re-installing NTI would just give me a second backup program.
  • Everything now back to what it was. Today, I have installed 135 Microsoft updates. One of which was Internet Explorer 8 and things are running smoothly, a bit faster, and the Internet Explorer screen is what I was used to.
  • laurent_14, Thanks very much for your assistance. Yesterday, I still could not get out of the 'loop' and did factory restore 7 times. In then end I booted from a DVD on which I had made a backup using Macrium Reflect. I had made that backup sometime last year. From the Macrium backup I have got things working again, and…
  • laurent_14, "Have you changed settings in the bios setup utility ?" Please explain, bearing in mind I am a novice !! But after the initial success, I entered F2, and > boot options> F12, and entered so that I could boot from hard disk, rather than the CD/DVD option. But still without success. (The Acer XP laptop does not…
  • laurent_14, Thanks for your links. Partial success after 2 hours. I managed to get into Acer e-recovery buy using a rescue disk I created last year. I have done a 'factory reset', and also a reset from a backup I had made using Acer several months ago. However, when I now boot up I get the Windows XP screen for 1-2…
  • laurent_14, Thank you very much for your reply. It looks promising, and I will have a look at your links and suggestion tomorrow when I have more time. Thanks, and I will post to let you know if I have been successful.
  • I cannot help you re this, as I use Windows XP, and also Vista, but see my recent topic Acer 1640Z crashed. I went into Acer e-recovery and crashed the Acer laptop, so I should be wary and wait for knowledgeable advice from other members of this forum.
