  • Thanks will PM him now and see how it goes. Alain
  • The solution appears to be the T6 Torx screws on the back. See this answer for further details and Acer's own support which discussed this recurring problem across multiple laptop models: http://community.acer.com/t5/S-and-R-Series-Laptops/S7-392-black-screens-if-on-battery-power/m-p/396820#U396820
  • With a high degree of confidence, I can now say this is the solution. Before tightening the T6 screws, the laptop failed repeatedly on battery. After a very stiff tightening, I've now operated the laptop multiple times (including extended usage) on battery without issue.
  • This may relate to loose Torx T6 screws on the reverse of the laptop. The issue is discussed in more detail here: http://community.acer.com/t5/S-and-R-Series/S7-392-fails-on-battery/m-p/404392/highlight/false#M3367
  • More updates. The laptop has continued to fail suddenly on battery after all of the following: * Discharging static (by sticking a paperclip in the battery cover hole on the reverse of the laptop) * Set the Power Options to never turn off on battery * Re-calibrating the battery by draining to as close to zero as possible,…
  • The "Sensor Monitoring Service" turned out to be a red herring. The laptop continued to faile after anything from 30s to 60min. Have now followed down the following and since then the battery and laptop have been behaving themselves: * Reset the battery as suggested by Acer support. Placed a paperclip into the small…
  • Quick update: I have not stuck a paperclip into the battery yet, but I have done the following: * In Power Options > Advanced Settings, I have set Hard disk > Turn off hard disk after to "15 minutes" for battery and "30 minutes" for AC power. * Same settings, I have set Display > Enable adaptive brightness to "Off" for…
  • Hi Sharanji, Thanks for the reply. I found the hole but before I stick a paperclip into it, what exactly does this do? Is it resetting the entire OS (delete files?), or just rset the battery? If the battery, what exactly does "resetting" the battery mean? What information will I glean from doing this that might…
  • In Control Panel > Power Options select "Choose what the power buttons do" or "Choose what closing the lid does". This shows the image that MrNobody shows. Select "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and at the bottom of the screen, untick "Turn on fast start-up (recommended)". You might also want to change the…
  • Thanks, that works. I didn't have the Acer USB Charge Manager installed on my laptop, not sure why. But, I searched Acer support and found it, installed it and ran the steps suggested. This has turned off the mouse on power down, so the result I needed. Unfortunately, there remain a number of small problems. For example: *…
  • That looks very promising, thanks. I'll try that tonight and get back to the forum with the results.
  • Sorry for the delay. I've now done loads of shut down, sleeps, etc and I *think* I've got the symptoms more precisely defined. * If I perform a full shut down, then the next time I lift the lid the laptop boots up into Windows 8.1 fine * If I close the lid (putting the laptop to sleep), and then lift the lid after a short…
  • I don't know whether this is related, but I recently bought a S7-392 and found the Intel app "Smart Connect" was installed. The idea behind Smart Connect is to wake the computer at "off-peak" times and keep your apps and Live Tiles (on the Metro screen) updated. In my opinion, this is nightmarish. Not only do I not mind…
  • Uh oh, it has started to happen again. Yesterday, after turning off "fast start", the laptop was behaving itself booting u in a single step, now today it has started playing up. The boot again takes two steps and the "Turn on fast start-up" option is NOT ticked. So this is not the solution or is only part of the solution.…
  • Well Acer need to give you a job...
  • Great suggestion, thanks. Unfortuantely it doesn't work! There is a ScrlLck key on the on-screen keyboard, but when I click it, it doesn't appear to have the desired result. One of the key bits of functionality TeamViewer provides when you tap SclLck is to allow ALT+TAB to switch between windows in the remote PC. With…
  • I don't know if this is of any help, but it helped me with a boot problem on an Acer S7-392 using Windows 8.1. * Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do (left side) * Untick "Turn on fast start-up (recommended)" - If this option is greyed out, click "Change settings that are currently disabled" at…
  • No, the Fn+Alt Gr key just loads the context menu for the current selected item. Useful, but not SCROLL LOCK. SCROLL LOCK is one of those mysterious, little used keys on the standard QWERTY keyboard that prevents the view from scrolling. It was used a long time ago, if memory serves, to help with entering text into…
  • Aah, ok. Yes, your explanation of what might have caused the slow boot when using the "Fast Boot" option makes sense. Maybe Windows has tight time-out criteria for plugged in devices on "Fast Boot". Even so, its been a bit poorly implemented then. I would have thought that it would be relatively simple to "learn" the…
  • That worked, thanks! I've tested it now both with opening the lid and with pressing the power button on the left-side of the laptop. In both cases the laptop now boots up in one quick step, without initially powering down and the screen going blank. The boot-up is very zippy and given that I don't have to do it twice…
