  • After installing the drivers from AMD's website, and Windows then overrides you, you need to go to the device manager, and right click on the Vega 56 in your display adapters and go to properties. In there, there is a drivers tab, inside that, is "roll back driver." Click that and it'll roll it back to the driver you…
  • @JokerSix8 Even the 2700X, although compatible, is system power limited when installed in the Helios 500. It'll power throttle, and even shut the computer completely off. The VRMs can't handle it. I feel the Helios 500 is EOL as of a year ago. But even as is, the 2700 and Vega 56 are a good pairing anyway.
  • You'll also still be limited by Ryzen's memory controller. For this series, you can only get 2933mhz with 2 sticks of single rank memory. Filling all 4 slots with single rank will drop you down to 2133 (as "supported speeds" go). I currently have 2400 stable with 2 ranks per channel, but I've tried adding dual rank memory…
  • Since this BIOS is locked out, any tweaks to the CPU clocks and enabling Precision Boost Overdrive won't stick after a reboot. You have to enable PBO at the BIOS level for it to apply. I've recently built a desktop out of the 2700X that I tried in the Helios earlier, and with a ASRock X470, I had to find PBO buried in a…
  • Today I got the chance to try putting a 2700X in the Helios 500. My dad retired his for a 3900X (it's a beast). The swap went smooth. When you install it, and reboot, you'll lose any security keys tied to your computer, so when Windows 10 reboots, you'll need to use 2-factor to gain access back into your machine. With that…
  • The thermal design process of the 3950X is "105w". However there's been much controversy with both AMD's and Intel's marketing when it comes to their numbers and AMD's is the most complex. Their formula to calculate TDP includes the dissipation value of a recommended cooler. And it happens that the recommended cooler for…
  • Most gaming laptop manufacturers don't even offer out the door support after they're released (looking at you Asus and MSI). This laptop has up to date video drivers, it's a desktop Vega 56, use the desktop drivers from AMD's website. I'm currently using 20.2.2 with no issues at all. As for 3950X support, I would highly…
  • I was in the process of making a video on what happens when you put the computer to sleep, then wake it back up. But as of the drivers I have installed, Adrenaline 20.1.4, it goes to sleep and wakes from sleep normally again. I did have the issue everyone else was having, with it not resuming and locking up with an…
  • Nah, it won't brick your machine. Worse case, you just boot into safe mode, use DDU or AMD cleanup utility and uninstall the driver, reinstall a clean driver and try again. Unlike VBIOS modding, powerplay table modding is perfectly safe. This VBiOS caps the vcore voltage to 1000mv. Heck my 2nd time modding, I didn't even…
  • Well if you like tinkering, the Vega 56 in this machine supports powerplay table modding. 180w works but 220w may become unstable. Happy modding :)
  • True but at the same time, who's going to take the time to update the BIOS,take apart the laptop, unseat the heatsink, swap the CPUs, replace all the thermal compound and pads, and assemble it all. Granted most of the people who got this machine are enthusiasts and know what they're getting.
  • Pretty sure this is dead. And a 3950X wouldn't even run on this machine if they did update the AGESA, too much power draw. It's a bit of a shame because I highly doubt we'll see another desktop in a laptop for the 3rd gen/Navi, but who knows. I'll certainly be one of the first to buy.
  • Yeah I'm thinking that there's a conflict between the Vega 56's V-bios, a Windows update, and desktop drivers. I have considered trying to flash the desktop reference Vega 56 bios to the V bios of the Helios 500, however, I'm a bit too chicken for that since this is my primary machine.
  • AMD rumored a 65w variant of the 12-core 24-thread, the R9 3900. It's supposed to be OEM only right now, but I'm sure it'll be released to the public. However ACER could capitalize on it and make a 3rd gen desktop replacement laptop too. Slap in a full fledged 5700xt (330w adapter will handle it), and it would be a monster.
  • I just stopped using sleep mode altogether and leave the system running. However same issue happens when you disconnect an external display and pop it back open to use the internal display. Like the keyboard miscolored lighting issue probably another bug that'll not be fixed since there's no incentive for Acer to continue…
  • On a somewhat unrelated note, I just got done editing the power play tables for this Vega 56. I have p7 set to 1600 megahertz at 1 volt, at +50% power allowance which allows it to use 180 Watts. I have 20% or more across-the-board performance improvement in every game and benchmark I tested it on. Silicon lottery winner?…
  • Says its an "Embedded Controller" update, unfortunately not a BIOS Microcode update. Wish we knew what embedded controller though, whether being the chipset or something else.

  • With the news of the ABBA driver causing voltage issues for many people on desktop platform 3000 series, I'm not too concerned anymore to be honest. My freesync works just fine with the latest drivers. Are you downloading them from AMD's official website? This is a desktop GPU chip so download and install the Vega 56…
  • I bought a cheapo 128gb M.2 SATA drive to confirm that the slot behaves like that. Even on the Intel model, the second M 2 slot is ideally configured to handle a Optane module. You can have either 2x M.2 SATA drives (RAID or no RAID), or 1 of each M.2 NVME and M.2 SATA. WD and Samsung seem to have the only 2TB M.2 SATA…
