  • For any future readers of this topic, it appears that macOS Sierra has fixed this issue. I'm no longer seeing the monitor flashing off and on, even when disconnecting/reconnecting my MacBook multiple times per day. So, #blameapple for this one.
  • Based on my testing with several different cables, the issue is definitely either with the monitor firmware or the Apple drivers. The only solution is to connect the monitor (any cable works, except for the power-only cable that Apple provides with the Macbook) and then restart the Macbook.
  • I ordered this one, but there's also a Belkin one and Pleson. I'm curious if rebooting will work for you as well, definitely would point to a driver issue.
  • I ordered a cable from Monoprice to see if it changes anything. In the meantime, it seems that if you restart the Macbook while connected to the display, it resolves the issue until it's disconnected.
