  • How do you enable "boot from network"?
  • Yep already been through all that, and I totally understand why. But before I bought this laptop there was no warning, no mention, no indication that they would switch the feature off. Also why have the option in the BIOS in there but not allow it to be selected? The support from Acer, and PCWorld was totally useless. It…
  • You have to completely remove the bottom cover in order to install the SSD. This requires removing many screws and unclipping of the chasis. It is said that doing that may invalidate the warranty but I would like to seem them try it. If you are not used to this thing, and you start gouging the case open with a 10mm flat…
  • There is nothing that can be done as-is. Only if more of us got together and asked Acer to do this would it happen. I have considered some kind of financial action against Acer but I doubt it would be worth it from one person. I just have to accept I have made a loss on this laptop, move on, never buy their stuff again and…
  • I have received a reply from Acer Support (UK) "Thank you for contacting Acer regarding your query So in your case you can not change UEFI to Legacy, your unit does not support that figure." I presume that is a statement and not a question, which means that my laptop does not support Legacy mode. So I am left with a laptop…
  • Also make sure you set AHCI and not RST + Optane. Do that and you will get full speed out of an NVME like this EVO 970 256GB
  • OK I downgraded the BIOS using the instructions in the link posted by JackE. Versons 1.05, 1.09 and 1.15 all do not allow Legacy mode either. There is just no option for selecting when you press Enter / F5 / F6 on Boot Mode: Clearly - right at the start - Acer had decided to totally remove 32bit and / or Legacy support…
  • I ran some tests on all four BIOSes that are currently available. There is a big difference in NVME performance with each. The worst was 1.05, which saw a speed of around 1900MB/s for read Seq Q32T1 1.09 and 1.15 increased this to around 2500MB/s The best performance is with 1.19, which hits around 3000MB/s
  • Yes I tried the acer bios installer / app with an earlier version but it won't allow a downgrade. There was a post stating how to over-rule the check but it was deleted. If anyone has the procedure to downgrade I would be grateful for a PM with info.
  • BTW, Before you do the BIOS upgrade could I ask if you can select Boot Mode: Legacy or is the only option UEFI?
  • I have an AN515-52-50VR which is similar spec to yours but does not come with Optane installed. I put in a 970 evo in the m.2 slot and it's running at full benchmark speed: > 3000MB/s read, >1500MB/s write
  • Main highstreet store dealer in UK. No way will they will take it back seeing as I installed an NVME in it. All I need is for Acer to answer a simple question: Have they disabled legacy mode Yes or No. The answer to that will determine the next step.
  • I went back to the store I purchased it from. I asked if they could check if their demo model would allow Legacy Mode. No way. They would not even allow themselves to do it. Gave some ***** and bull story that 'it has a different Bios and software to the one I bought'. I think I need to deal with Acer support direct on…
  • Can it be proven that an earlier version allowed Legacy mode to work? If that is the case then it's either a flaw - which Acer should fix - or I have a good case against Acer, in that they have effectively disabled a laptop without warning.
  • OK, I have now tried Linux. I tried two different flavours on two different USB sticks, on two different platforms (this Acer Nitro and a Z370 desktop). 32bit Mint 19 Cinnamon This did not work on the Acer. It does not show up in Boot Order This does work on a z370 desktop 32bit Ubuntu Server 14.04.5This did not work on…
  • No it makes no difference with F5, F6. The only option in the blue box is [UEFI]. Pressing F5 or F6 does not change it.
  • Just tried contacting Acer Premium Support via the support section of the site. The link just 404s Next I tried the Chat facility (UK). That gives a certificate error and the browser refuses to continue. What the hell have I done! Why did I switch to Acer! I love the trees but not the company.
  • Nothing heard yet. This is getting very frustrating. This is my first Acer after buying major labels for decades. I don't wish it to be my last Acer. Here's an update. I just purchased an external USB DVD drive so that I can boot up with official Windows DVDs. All the 64bit versions of the O/S boot fine. The 32 bit…
  • OK, there is no joy here. 1. I set AHCI mode, save, restart no Legacy option. 2. I remove the NVME drive so there are no drives in this laptop at all. No Legacy option3. I put in an old spare blank Intel 330 SSD. No Legacy option. So I can not even get Legacy mode with no disks in it at all. This leads me to wonder if Acer…
  • No option that I can find. The following screen is the problem. When you press enter on Boot Mode: you can only select UEFI. There is no option for Legacy or anything else. This happens with or with a USB inserted and with our without a GPT or MBR version of the USB when inserted. (Side Note): To prove that the laptop is…
