Thanks for the reply, I realize the cpu is the biggest that Acer have installed, but as this is an old machine I was hoping that an owner has fitted a newer cpu. I have another very old laptop with 3gb mem (max), low spec and a 2 core 2ghz cpu. I set them both up and ran the same tasks at the same time and both finished…

Problems all sorted. The scrambled screen was down to the cpu having old heat sink compound on the pins (and not enough on the graphics card chip). I used a jewellers eye magnifying glass to get every bit of grease off. Win xp no problem, (in bios choose ide/sata then xp will load on) simply wrote down each device in win7…

All sorted now, thank you for your help. Xp running sweet as a nut and playing all my old desktop games, partitioned the hard drive win 7 all good.Cheers.

Problem fixed, go to the bios and change the sata settings to ide/sata, then reboot and install win xp.Apparently this is the same for a lot of Acer laptops, which brings me to ask the question why didn't anyone tell me? Now I have to find chipset drivers. Anyone?

It toggles between 4200 and 5000 drivers or cards, in device manager you can see one change to the other when the button is pressed. Strangely, 4200 uses 2gb memory and 5000 uses 512mb. I have never seen it change from one to the other without pressing the button. Anyhow, when in 5000 mode it scrambles the screen up…

It's number 13, unlucky for some.

I though it was a gaming laptop when I bough it, but it doesn't play world of war planes (Amd 5000 series not up to it) and none of my old xp games as no win xp. Bios Phoenix Technologies LTD V1.23 25/04/2011Smbios version 2.6 whet ever this is.

Hi, Sorry I should have said, it has two graphics cards, you switch from one to another by pressing a button on the top of the laptop.Win 10, yuck! Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot cattle prod :)

I have tried three different win xp discs, no joy. Vista and win 7 no problem.It's a Aspire 5553g ZR8A other numbers are: N934G32MnI have used three different hard drives and three different memory sticks (in different slots, each attempt). So I wouldn't have thought there's a real need for checking hard drives and memory.…
