  • I'm having another problem now. The computer is working slowly, sometimes taking excessive time to respond to the keyboard. When I go online I'll click on a news article. The browser goes there but when I try to scroll down to read the article the screen freezes up. Windows says, "Internet Explorere is not responding,"…
  • Yes, I burned it to a CD. Thanks for the link to the tutorial. I'll take look!
  • Also, do you know anything about Ultimate Boot CD? Someone from a previous question suggested using it to diagnose the hard drive & memory. I downloaded UBCD but haven't figured out how to use it yet. It gives you a menu but when you select a category & click "Enter" nothing happens.
  • Can you tell me how to get into the metro screen? I thought I could get there by pressing F8 or F10 but when I do that with this laptop it goes through an automatic repair process. it gives me the option of troubleshooting but I didn't see Command Prompt as a choice.
  • Thanks, I know where that cover is. I changed the memory chip a couple of months ago. I didn't know you could change the hard drive there, too. God bless!
  • Thanks for the information. The laptop is still working but I'll check out the price of a new hard drive just in case.
  • Thank you both for your replies. The laptop belongs to a friend but I'll try to check it periodically to see if the number of bad sectors increases. I'll also try check disk to see what it tells me. Does the computer normally write to bad sectors? How does flagging the bad sectors stop this? How many bad sectors have to…
  • I reinstalled Win 8.1 and so far it's working okay, but I have another problem. I checked the hard drive with HD Tune, as you suggested. It found 40 bad sectors. I started a new thread asking if there's any way to fix the bad sectors. I received one reply, which works for Win XP & 7, but not for Win 8.1. If you can help…
  • Thanks for your reply. I went to the link you suggested, http://www.wikihow.com/Repair-Bad-Sectors. It describes a process for repairing bad sectors with Win XP & Win 7 by right clicking on Drive C, then clicking on Properties, Tools, Check Now, and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Unfortunately, this laptop…
  • I reinstalled Windows 8.1 over a month ago, along with Norton 360, and downloaded all the available updates. So far the laptop is still booting up and working okay. Last night I scanned the hard drive with HD Tune. It shows 40 bad sectors out of 2500. Is that enough to affect laptop performance? Is there any way to repair…
  • Ok, thanks! I won't have time to try it for a couple of days but will let you know how it turns out.
  • I just looked at UBCD. According to the website, it works with Win XP, Vista, and 7. Does it also work with Win 8? HD Tune says it works with Win 8, would that also include 8.1? (I'm assuming it would.) I seem to remember that there are memorey & hard drive diagnostics built into the OS if you boot up using F8 or F10.…
  • Thanks, I won't have time for a few days, but I'll download the programs and try them.
  • I forgot to mention that I also installed Norton 360 each time I installed Win 8.1. Someone on a Microsoft forum said that might be causing the problem. I'm waiting to see how it works without Norton. Are there any compatability issues with Win 8.1 on this laptop. If you're not sure, which Acer forum would you suggest?
  • Thanks for your reply! I replaced the original 2 GB RAM chip with a new 4 GB chip because I was told that Win 8 would work better that way, so I don't think RAM is the problem with this computer. I'm not sure the hard drive is the problem either, but wouldn't mind checking it out. How do you run a diagnostic on the hard…
  • I recently upgraded an Acer Aspire 5253 laptop from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 8.1 Home Premium. I also expanded the memory from 2 GB to 4 GB so it will work optimally. I downloaded the Acer drivers for Win 8.1 64 bit for this laptop but in some cases there are 2 drivers for the same device - 2 touchpad drivers & 2 wireless…
  • Thank you, I was able to solve the problem. I was able to expand the memory from 2 GB to 4 GB and replaced Win 8.1 32 bit with 64 bit.
  • Thanks for your reply. I'm also wondering about the architecture of the laptop. The laptop belongs to a friend. The Win 7 was not working properly so her relative installed an unauthorized copy of Win 8 Professional 32 bit - no CD or product key. I bought a copy of Win 8.1 Home Premium but was having difficulty installing…
