Safely ejecting an external storage device can help to keep your documents and data safe and prevent data corruption.
How to Safely Eject an External Storage Device from the Taskbar
- In the far right corner of your taskbar, select the caret^ to open the hidden icons menu.
- Locate the external storage device icon.
- Right click on the icon and select Eject.
How to Safely Eject an External Storage Device from File Explorer
- Open File Explorer📁.
- On the left side of the File Explorer window, locate the external storage device.
- Right click the device and select Eject.
How to Safely Eject from the Settings application
- Open Settings⚙️, you can do so by holding down Windows⊞ and I on your keyboard.
- On the left side of Settings, select Bluetooth and devices.
- Select the Devices tab.
- In the list of devices, locate the storage device.
- Once located, select the device to expand the menu, and select Remove.
Once ejected, you'll be notified that it's safe to disconnect the device.
