Why is my computer not getting any Windows updates anymore?
On October 8, 2024, Windows 11 Home and Pro editions, version 22H2 reached end of servicing. The October 2024 security update is the last update available for these editions. Version 22H2 of the Enterprise and Education editions will reach end of servicing on October 14, 2025. These versions will receive security updates until then.
If your computer is using version 22H2 of Windows 11 Home or Pro, your computer is not getting Windows updates anymore.
Get the newer version of Windows to stay up to date notification
If your Windows 11 device has reached end of servicing, there will be a “Get the newer version of Windows to stay up to date” notification at the top of the Windows Update menu on your computer. To check your computer for this end of servicing notification, follow the steps below.
How to check if Windows needs to be updated to a newer version
- Click on the Windows icon in the task bar or press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.
- Then click on Settings in the Start menu.
- In the menu on the left, click on Windows Update to open the Windows Update menu.
- If your Windows version needs to be updated, there is a Get the newer version of Windows to stay up to date message at the top of the Windows Update menu.
Updating to the latest version of Windows 11
To keep your device supported and receiving monthly updates that are critical to security and ecosystem health, you need to update your Windows 11 version to the latest version. You will be able to choose a convenient time for your device to restart and complete the update.
You can install the latest version of Windows 11 in two ways:
- Use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant to upgrade the current version of Window 11 to the latest version. This will not remove any data.
- Install a clean installation of the latest version of Windows 11 using the Microsoft Media Creation tool. This will remove the data from the system.
Choose how you wish to update Windows 11 on your computer and follow the specific instructions for that update method below.
1) How to update Windows using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant
- Open an internet browser on your computer.
- Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11.
- Then scroll to the Windows 11 Installation Assistant section and click on Download Now.
- When the file has been downloaded, open the file.
- After opening the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, click on Accept and install. The latest version of Microsoft Windows 11 will now be downloaded and installed on your computer.
Note: During this process your computer may restart several times. - Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the upgrade procedure.
2) How to update Windows using the Windows 11 Media Creation tool
Requirements: 8 GB USB flash drive
- Download the Windows 11 Installation Media Tool.
- Open an internet browser on your computer.
- Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11.
- Scroll down to Create Windows 11 Installation Media.
- Click on Download Now.
- Create the USB installation media.
- After downloading the tool, open the tool by double-clicking on it.
- Select your preferred language and edition.
- Then click on Next.
- Insert an 8 GB USB flash drive.
- Then click on Next to start making the installation media.
Note: Downloading and creating the installation media can take up to 30 minutes, depending on your internet connection speed. - Once done click on Finish. The installation media is now ready and can be used to install Windows 11 by booting from the USB installation media.
- Boot from the USB installation media.
