A microphone is a critical tool for conducting calls, making voice notes or playing games. Whether your computer has a built-in microphone or you are connecting an external microphone, it is important to set up the microphone correctly and test it to ensure it is working properly. Use the instructions below to setup and test your microphone in Windows 11.
How to Setup a Wired Microphone in Windows 11
- Click on Start ⊞ and select Settings ⚙, or use Windows + I to quickly open Settings.
- Select System.
- Click on Sound
- In the Input section under Choose a device for speaking or recording, select the microphone you want to use.
How to Setup Wireless Microphone in Windows 11
- Click on Start ⊞ and select Settings ⚙, or use Windows + I to quickly open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Sound.
- In the Input section, locate Pair a new input device and click add device
- In the pop-up window that appears, click add device. Make sure your device is in pairing mode.
- Click on your wireless device and follow the instructions to set it up
- Check under input to make sure it selected as your default microphone.
How to Test Microphone Windows 11
- Right click the sound icon at the bottom right of the taskbar and select Sound Settings.
- Scroll to Input and select the rightward facing arrow next to the microphone you would like to test.
- On the properties screen find Test your microphone and click Start Test.
- Speak into the microphone to run the microphone tester.
- If the microphone is working, you will see the volume slider move as you speak. You will also see a result next to the Start Test button.
