Facial recognition is a way of confirming your identity using your face. For many Apple or Android smartphone users, you may already be familiar with the “unlock phone with facial recognition” feature. But, did you know that you can also unlock your computer with facial recognition?
Windows Hello face authentication, in the Windows 11 operating system, is a built-in software that allows users to unlock their computers with facial recognition.
This article will teach you how to set up facial recognition on Windows 11 using a biometric camera.
Note: Windows Hello face authentication feature requires an Intel RealSense or 3D Camera to support facial unlock.
How to set up facial recognition
- Click the Start ⊞ button and select Settings ⚙.
- On the left sidebar find and go into Accounts.
- Find Sign-in options and click into it.
- Under the “Ways to sign in” section, select the Facial recognition (Windows Hello) setting.
- Click the Setup button. A “Windows Hello setup” prompt should appear.
- Click Get Started at the bottom of the prompt.
- Confirm your current password or PIN.
- Look into the camera to create a facial recognition profile of your face.
- Once your face is recorded, click the Close button to complete the setup.
When you complete the steps, you can lock your device using Windows + L button and sign in again by looking at the camera.
If the sign-in is not working correctly, under the “Facial recognition (windows Hello)” setting, you can find an “Improve recognition” option to refine the recognition.
How to disable facial recognition
- Click the Start ⊞ button and select Settings ⚙.
- Select Accounts from the menu on the left.
- Click Sign-in options.
- Under the “Ways to sign in” section, select Facial recognition (Windows Hello).
- Click the Remove button.
- Confirm your account credentials.
- Click the Ok button.
After you disable facial recognition, you can continue signing in with a traditional password.
