How do I change the display orientation from horizontal to vertical?
There may be times when you want to change your screen orientation to display vertically to view an infographic, spreadsheet or presentation that looks better in portrait mode. Windows allows you to easily rotate your display to change between landscape and portrait mode.
How to rotate your screen in Windows 11
- Click on the Start menu (Windows icon) and select Settings (Gear icon).
- Select System from the left menu.
- Click on Display.
- Click the drop down in the Display Orientation section and choose your desired display orientation from the options:
- Landscape
- Portrait
- Landscape (flipped)
- Portrait (flipped)
How to rotate the screen in Windows 7, 8.1 and 10
- Press the Windows key, type Display settings and press Enter.
- Choose the display you want to change.
- Under Orientation, click the down arrow at the edge of the box and choose the orientation you want to use.
- Click Apply, then OK to save the changes. You can repeat the steps to switch your display back.
Auto rotation
Some rotatable products have a setting for auto rotation to allow the screen to orient to the direction you are holding the device. The auto rotation lock feature is turned on by default in Windows 11. Use the steps below to turn off this feature.
How to disable auto rotation in Windows 11
- Click on the Start menu (Windows icon) and select Settings (Gear icon).
- Select System from the left menu.
- Click on Display.
- Scroll down to the Scale and Layout section and switch the Rotation lock toggle to On or Off.

- Place the tablet into Pad/Tablet mode.
- Click the Start menu and select Settings.
- Click System.
- Click Display.
- Scroll down and toggle Lock rotation of this display to OFF.
