Hello,

I checked that the Crucial 16gb ddr4 2400 sodimm 1.2v cl17 worked as an upgrade for my A515-51g. I bought it, removed the old 4gb, installed the new Crucial and the computer won't boot. And I return the old memory it turn on normally.

I read in the manual that this model supports up to 20gb, so the 4gb fixed and an expansion of up to 16gb.

Can someone help me get this working?

Thanks

    Hi,
Could you please post the model numbers of the memory module you bought and the original 4GB module you have removed from the laptop.

The Crucial suggested memory for your Aspire 5 515-51G is the PC4-19200 "CT16G4SFD824A.C16FDD1" DDR4-2400 16GB module and it should work 100%, this module is the same as your OEM Micron MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G3B1 - PC4-19200 DDR4-2400MHz module. Both of these ram modules have the same CL=17, Clock Cycle - 17-17-17 and run at 1.2V. What bios are you running? Have you got the last bios installed for your Aspire 5 A515-51G the version 2.02 dated 2019/03/04? As that is essential, also check that the new ram is seated properly into its slot and the slot is clean (clean it with an electronic circuit cleaner fluid spray), also, whenever a larger capacity and new ram module is installed the system has to be rebooted a few times so that the bios recognises the new ram and the reboots properly, its normal to have a none boot as you might have to do it a few times so that it recognises the new Crucial CT16G4SFD824A.C16FDD1 DDR4-16GB.

Also, have a look at this cmd prompt "“How to get full PC memory specs (speed, size, type, part number, form factor) on Windows 10” to find out the complete specs for your ram. Btw, I've attached a pdf spec sheet below for your OEM DDR4-4GB Micron MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G3B1 - DDR4-2400MHz module ram also and seeing that you have returned the Crucial ram, have a look at the Micron spec sheet and the CPUz specs and compare that with the new ram module that you might order as there is no reason that a 1x DDR4-16GB module like the Crucial spec should not work. Good luck and hope this helps.

Thega, sorry about not realising this sooner and not looking and advising you wrongly above, as this should have also been studied by Crucial and their technicians that make up these lists, they should never have advised that a DDR4-2400MHz works on this laptop, as their upgrades are allot of the times wrong

You should always look and study the Acer Manual on the A515-51/A515-51G it categorically states that this laptop only accepts per socket 2Gb/4Gb/8GB/16 DDR4 SODIMM 260 Pin at 1.2V of either DDR4-1866MHz PC4-17000 SODIMM or DDR4-2133MHz PC4 17000 SODIMM ram:

Your OEM 1x 4GB module ram of the Micron MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G3B1 - PC4-19200 DDR4-2400MHz might work with a low capacity ram like the DDR4-4GB but and if you upgrade to the max 20GB and with a 1x 16GB at DDR4-2400MHz-PC4-19200 ram module this laptop does not work with it, as you have to stick to the recommended specification and suggested by Acer and that is a 1x 16GB PC4-14900 - DDR4-1866 SODIMM or 1x 16GB PC4-17000 - DDR4-2133 SODIMM which makes sense, try that as that should work and that is why (as I've suggested above) do your research and do all the cmd prompt spec findings about your memory as I've suggested above. Good luck.

    @Thega
There's also the possibility of the Crucial module was faulty(DOA), anyway, try another brand like ADATA, Kingston Value RAM, Hynix or Samsung 2133MHz module as @StevenGen stated, 2133MHz modules are difficult to find but you may find on an auction site, even a used one will work well.

Hi @StevenGen and @brummyfan2 thank you for your replies.

I searched before buying but didn't find that range of information. It should be more clear on Acer side as well. Why use a 2400MHz memory, and say in the specifications that it support it if not with higher GB - I didn't find any information in the Manual that is available in the support site(attached).

It really is difficult to find 2133MHz, I will try to return the one I bought to the store and get a 8GB at least. It could boost a little the performance. Thank you for the time in finding all that info, I would never find that by myself.

I will also try some reboots before going back there, if by 'magic' it works.

*Edited: I had also updated the bios version to the latest available.

    Thanks!

The above caption is from the official Acer Service Manual (that you don't have access to) for the Aspire 5 - A515-51/A515-51G and its not written in the usual manual so what I've given you is 100% correct and Crucial should have known. Also you can easily buy 16GB modules of either the DDR4-1866MHz PC4-17000 SODIMM or the DDR4-2133MHz PC4 17000 SODIMM ram on eBay, 1x 16GB module of DDR4-2133MHz is about US $88.00 on eBay. Send that 1x 16GB Crucial DDR4-2400MHz back and I'm sure that Crucial has that type of memory that they can replace it with. Also and remember, there are allot of silly lists that are just for marketing and business sense and they have not been tested, that is why I've given you a link of how to do a cmd prompt spec finder for all memory as I'm not sure how Crucial does their lists or how accurate they are?

I also have an A515-51G. After very close inspection I noticed that after opening the plastic cover at some point that a tiny piece of plastic used to keep it secured chipped off, which is severe because the plate also functions as a press for a button on the mb that must be pressed to turn on the laptop. I created a makeshift fill out of card and tape because it won't tighten with just 1 screw.

The keyboard is broken in two places, for the power button I have the cap removed and can turn it on by working tweezers under the plastic. Hope it won't come to that. Gl.
  • I would try to remove the lition battery, the rtc battery and the ram. Then connect the ram memory, the rtc battery and the lition battery, in that order. As has already been said by classmate @StevenGen, leave the laptop on for a few minutes, even if it does not boot, to verify that the new ram is recognized.
