W510 / W511 keyboard dock drains battery while system off

I have the impression that the W510 / W510 keyboard dock drains battery while system off.

Here is what I see:

Fully charging system with keyboard dock

Both say charged to 100%

Turning off system (not standby)

Wait 1 day

Dock battery shows 50% left, system battery at 100%

Wait 1 day

Dock battery shows 1%, system battery still at 100%

Wait 1 day

Dock battery disappeared, system battery at 98%

Wait 1 day

Dock battery still gone, system battery at 97%

So it seems there is significant drain of the dock while system is shut off.

Asside from that the dock battery is not recognized when it is empty.

Charging it for a while and restarting makes the dock battery visible again.

Do you have the same issue with the dock?

Acer what are you doing about it?

I do not think this is an isolated case as I, too, shutdown my W510 w/ keyboard dock last night when the batteries were at 100% and when I checked this morning the keyboard dock battery had drained about 20%.

Theoretically, there should be zero drain of the batteries when the system has been shut down.  What's up with that???

The shop I ordered from exchanged my whole unit.

But the new one shows the same issue.

So this IS a general problem!

i'm not sure if tgis explains it but i turned on my spotify desktop app on w511 usually when its off docking it stays off until i reach out to it and push some or touch some. however when i put it on the dock it sometimes turned on automatically and the music resumes on my spotify desktop app. this happens a few times when i left my w511 in dock.

so, my conclusion is that w511 or the dock tries to reconnect themse'ves sometime automatically, hence the systems automatically turns on and hence the battery drain. especially if u still have some apps running on the background. i have no idea how to turn this off coz in my opinion its somewhat software related not hardware defect.

I have been experiencing comparable things, but I have to state that I do not lose the battery overnight completely, but after 4-5 days I see it going down from 100% to 30%.

I will disable hybrid boot and really turn off everything and see if this helps...

I just tested my W510 w/keyboard dock for battery drain with my system completely turned off.  I followed the advice of Acer tech support as documented in this thread: factory reset, update Windows 8 with all Microsoft updates (no MS furrrnished drivers), Acer 2.08 driver package, Acer 2.11 driver package, .113 Broadcom Wireless Network Adapter update.  I made sure that all Acer-furnished APP notifications were turned off, and WiFi in Airplane Mode, plus I disabled the WiFi network adapter in Device Manager, just to be certain.

With the system powered down and with A/C disconnected, after 14 hours 20% of the battery in the keyboard dock had drained.  Needless to say, I was very surprised and disappointed at these results.  I decided to become an early adopter of a Windows 8 tablet running on a Clovertrail platform precisely for the extended connected standby time.  Because of this battery drain problem, my Acer W510 is useless to me and I feel deceived and  cheated by Acer.

I get the sense that I am participating in the beta testing of an Acer product that was not ready for production release AND I had to pay full retail price for this "privilege".

What does Acer plan to do about this to make this right?  Please let me know.

Did u guys ever think just to detach the keyboard when you leave the device?

Now i always do that and never had problem with battery drain on the keyboard nor the tablet.

As i said earlier the dock or the tablet tries to reconnect once in a while...maybe to make sure that the keyboard system is active or so, kind of like when your nic can turn on your pc when an active connections tries to reconnect to it i guess. So the only solution to it is to actually detach your keyboard when its not in use (when u leave it for sleeping or other things)

I expect to be able to use my W510 w/keyboard dock as designed.  Workarounds to solve apparent design deficiencies of a product that was not ready for release do not give me the functionality that I paid for.  At this point I would rather have my money back so that I could purchase a useable tablet.

    Hi supersoul,
correct me if i'm wrong but you are purchasing a tablet right, not a laptop? You were complaining about the dock and not about the tablet right?

because i am a bit confuse, the tablet by itself is fine, correct?

just fyi, my friend's envy also suffers the exact same thing, battery in its dock is drained when connected to the tablet although its been left alone overnight.

Yeah, I bought a tablet, but I also bought the keyboard dock because I wanted the added benefit of a hybrid system, which is a feature that Acer is selling.  Even if the battery drain problem is isolated to the keyboard dock, the system does not conform to my requirements and if Acer cannot make this right, then they have failed to meet my needs.  Quite obvious, I would think.

    hi guys,

i just bought acer w511 two days ago and i experienced some problems:

    1) it stated that w511 has 64 GB SSD and when i checked on my computer, it says only 33.2GB out of 47.5GB? is it correct?

    2) the keyboard docking drain faster than the tablet. i calculated that every 1 hour it drains from 100% to 64%. is it correct?

i dont experience the keyboard docking drains while the system is off..(my tablet itself last 8 hours 55 minutes and the keyboard last 2 hours 15 menit, so total is about 11 hours)

    3) anyone have tried installing game such as warcfraft, counter strike on it?does it work?

    4) how do i copy the ACER recovery to DVD and boot from the DVD? the Acer sales told me that i need a 16GB flash disk to do that because windows 8 cant read from dvd disc

    thank you.

    2. Since i don't always dock it, I usually get around 15 hours in total with the docking using mobile network.

    3. I don't think its a good idea Smiley Tongue but u can always try

    4. Your acer salesman sucks lol.....the recovery DVD is placed at the bottom of your package box and since I also own w510, I once reset my w510 using the DVD in the package. But u may need a USB DVD drive.

Omg, now i know the source of the draining battery issue, turns out the keyboard dock is actually charging the tablet!!!!

i just found out from another post, and made me think why the keyboard dock always try to reconnect to the tablet...because its actually charging it!!!

this also means that eventhough the system is off, the keyboard dock will always charge the tablet when connected, so its like connecting to a power outlet. No wonder the battery of the dock is drained.

the new driver will stop this issue because it will stop your dock from charging the tablet.

    hello, same problem here.

Does anyone have a solution? Because, I haven't bought a tablet, I have bought an hybrid PC. And I like to leave it as a PC, and to make it a tablet, only sometimes.

Only Acer had a solution. And they don't care...

What i do ? Charge to 100% tablet + dock and if i don't use the device during more than 2 days, i take off the tablet from the keyboard. No battery drain Smiley Sad
