This brand new laptop was working very well until 2 days ago (it is less than 2 weeks old). Now, the screen remains completely dark. Battery reset and various function keys have been attempted several times to no avail. Is this normal? Does this laptop need repair or replacement already?

    (1) Do you see the ACER  boot logo on startup?
    (2) If not, can you make out  any images by shining a flashlight at the  screen in a darkened room?
    (3) Does HDMI out to a TV screen work? If not, try pressing the FN+F5 toggle key combo a few times to see if either screen responds.

    2) Nope. Nothing
    3) Nope. Nothing

Press and hold the power button till the machine shuts off. Remove the charger. Re-do the battery reset for 60 seconds while at the same time pressing and holding the power button. Then plug the charger back in and wait for the battery charge LED to turn from steady orange to steady blue. May take several hours. Then turn it on again. If still no joy, don't delay but quickly return the machine to the vendor as defective for a refund or exchange before the vendor's returns policy period expires, usually only a week or two. Acer repair service will take longer. Jack E/NJ

Thank you. I'll know the result in a few hours. I hope this works. The machine is brand new, and my customer had already successfully stored several new documents on it. From what I've now researched, I understand that this can happen with Acer laptops. I'm hoping this isn't a lemon. I have another customer for whom I recommended the same purchase last week.

It turns out that the hard drive crashed. We connected the drive to a USB harness and ran a scan. It found structural (partition) issues.

Thanks for reporting back. However, even with a bad HDD, you should still see a BIOS menu (F2 on boot) and logo screen. Jack E/NJ

Agreed, but no BIOS menu or Acer logo has been visible. I'm quite comfortable with PCs and laptops to the point that I've built several from parts. This is proving to be a very unusual problem. We'll likely never know what that root problem is, but something is definitely significantly wrong.
