the last week my acer laptop has been charging on and off when I plug it in. it will start of charging, suddenly stop and then repeat this a few more times before either not charging at all or charging but will then randomly stop later on. this happens even if the laoptop/ charger hasn't been moved at all and I've checked the batteries health and it says its fine. what could be causing this and how do I resolve it

This is normal if the machine is under heavy load or power drain usually due to game playing. It means that the battery must occasionally help the charger to meet the system's power demands. During those times the battery is draining and not being charged. It does no harm but if it bothers you, you can help avoid intermittent charging behavior by setting your Control Panel power plan from performance  or balanced mode to power saver mode.  Jack E/NJ

This happens even when I first turn the laptop on though and when it’s literally doing nothing and not under any heavy load. :(

Open Control Panel again. Search 'button'. Click 'change what the power buttons do'. Click 'change settings that are currently unavailable' Scroll down and uncheck the box fast startup. Jack E/NJ

Open Control Panel again. Search 'power plan'. Click 'edit power plan' in left pane. Click 'change advanced power settings'. Click 'processor power management' folder in the box that pops up. Click maximum process state folder. Change both settings to 50%. Jack E/NJ

Back again with the never ending issue :’( did this and once again, worked for a little bit and then the issue has started again. Is there any other way to fix it or have I exhausted all routes. Is this just the laptop trying to preserve the battery?

Are both max processor state settings still at 50% and still in power saver mode. If not, a Win10 update probably got installed while you weren't looking and changed them back to 100%. Jack E/NJ

Drop them to 25% to see what happens on a cold boot. Jack E/NJ

This hasn’t worked, the charger light and power light just start flashing at the same time.

No when the charger isn’t plugged in the power LED is just steady blue without any flashing

OK. Shut the machine off. Plug the charger back in. Don't try to turn it back on till the battery charge LED turns from steady orange to steady blue.

Then go to the elevated command prompt.  Enter 'powercfg   /batteryreport'. Then return to the desktop. Open file explorer. Then search for' battery-report.html' in the c:\windows\system32\ sub-folder. Double-click to open it in the browser. Post screenshot of the first part of the report if possible that compares design full charge capacity with its remaining full charge capacity. Jack E/NJ

Your charger plug appears to be loose in the laptop charger jack. When charging seems to start oscillating again, try pressing & holding (manipulate) the charger plug in the jack to see if it reduces or changes the on-off-on cycling behavior. Jack E/NJ

Holding it doesn’t seem to work. Will getting a new charger solve this problem or is it the jack?

Let's test the jack if you're up to it because it require some disassembly. Turn the machine off. Remove the charger. Remove the HDD and RAM module doors. Remove 17 screws from bottom cover and pry it off with a credit card wedge starting from the left hinge around to the other hinge.  Disconnect the battery from the mainboard. Then re-assemble. Plug the charger back in. Try to turn it on without the battery. Jack E/NJ
