I think it's more likely that the battery can no longer hold a charge. If the battery is original, it's well beyond it's expected service life. I would try a a new battery first. Less than USD$20. Jack E/NJ

A blinking orange battery LED suggests either a bad battery controller or shorted battery cells. Try running it on charger alone without battery. Jack E/NJ

hello Jack E/NJ thank you for your reply ,it is not the battery led that blinks but the other led next to it ,with the small bulb logo.when I press the power button without the battery and with the charger plugged in, nothing happens but when I press the power button with the battery but without the charger it blinks 5 times and then nothing.0

I think my charger is faulty.0

>>>charger(he always deliver 19.4 volts like normal)>>>This is the correct open circuit voltage of the charger's output plug. This suggests but doesn't necessarily mean the charger is OK. The 5-time blinking on the battery alone likely means the battery is below the critical charge level of 5%. Before trying to turn it on again, I suggest that you leave the charger plugged in to see if the battery charger LED turns to steady blue. This may take a day or two if the laptop was allowed to sit without being plugged in for a long period of time. Jack E/NJ

ok,I already tried that yesterday and when I was randomly clicking the power button the laptop turned on very briefly(on battery) 5-10 seconds with the screen backlinght on,hard drive activity and blincking battery led and then turned off .it doesn't do it anymore so I really think my charger doesn't work and the battery just had a bit of juice to turn on the laptop for a short time .Or can it be the small red and black power cable that brings the electricity from the power plug to the motherboard?0

yes the battery has a date of september 2010 so it is the original one ,the charger is a replacement one because it is branded "HIPRO" and not acer(I didn't now that because it is not my computer)so i will buy a new battery, should I buy this one? ACER doesn't usually manufacture chargers or battery packs. So the Hipro manufactured charger could be the original supplied with the laptop. Same with the battery. Shown below are the part nos, for the various chargers and battery packs that were originally used with the 5742 series. Your link seems to be the proper battery pack for this series. Jack E/NJ

OK. Turn the machine off, remove the charger & battery. Remove the door to the RAM modules and remove the modules. Replace the door. Then plug the battery and charger back in. But don't try to turn it on. Is the battery charger LED on the laptop steady orange or steady blue? Jack E/NJ

I removed the two 2gb ddr3 modules and plugged the battery and charger in and still nothing, not one single led even after 10 minutes0

Remove charger and battery again. Remove HDD door and disconnect the hard drive from the mainboard. Replace door. Remove anything connected to any of the external USB ports including a mouse dongle, printer, external display. Plug battery and charger back in. Any LEDs lit now? Make sure battery is pushed all the way in and locked by the sliding latch on the bottom. Jack E/NJ

Ok the original 500gb hdd was failing(it was very slow in an another computer)and I replaced it with a 120gb ssd and even with it removed there is still no leds or any other sign.0

Do you still have the old battery and old charger to see if any LEDs light up with no SSD, no RAM and nothing else connected? Jack E/NJ

yes i still have the old battery and charger I tried and the machine is still not working0

Oh,while searching the old charger and battery I found the old keyboard of the machine and the keys are very sticky wich is a sign of liqid damage so i'm a bit worried about that because that mean the motherboard is probably dead(but it showed signs of life in the past so I don't now)0
