Looks like I found my answer.  As my Aspire 3 A315-23-R7XD has a PCIe Gen 3x2 slot, I can't install a Gen 3x4 drive.  Boo-Hoo

    You can, just install a:
    WD Blue SN550 500GB NVMe Internal SSD - Gen3 x4 PCIe 8Gb/s, M.2 2280, 3D NAND, Up to 2,400 MB/s - WDS500G2B0C
    It works great...Crystaldiskmark - 128Gb (old) 1551.11 & this one 1864.87

    Thanks Mr Z.
Acting on info from the great folks at Acer "Chat" Support, I replaced the 128GB drive that came standard with a 1TB NVME  PCI-E Gen 3x4 drive with no issues (took about 10 minutes).  It is described as M.2 2280 format - purely so that we old f*rts can visualize it - it is not actually M.2 slot.  Boy, does that baby fly - speed is 3400+ (almost 7 times as fast as SATA 3!)
