Laptop has been working fine but today booted up but with black screen. It's not totally blank, you can just about make out icons on the desktop etc if you look really carefully so it has booted up but is far too dark to use.

Any ideas?

This may seem like an over-simplyfied answer but have you checked the brightness? This is how Windows recommends you do it: Laptop displays don't have brightness or contrast buttons on the front. For a majority of laptops, there isn't a control for setting the contrast. However, you can set the brightness of many laptops by pressing and holding the Fn key, and then pressing a function key to decrease brightness (Picture of the Decrease brightness button) or increase brightness (Picture of the Increase brightness button).

    Hope that's helpfull.

Yes that was the first thing I checked and it has no effect. Neither does Fn + F6.

    Thank you though.

I get that some times, what I do is turn it off, disconect the power cable & take out the battery.

Then hold down the on/off button for 30 seconds.

Put the battery & power cable back & tun it on as normal.

Its some kind of static build up if this works, if not its possibly more serious.

If you're acer is no longer under warranty you might try to flash or upgrade your existing bios as shown in this video.

First check to see if you can download the existing or newer bios from the acer driver downloads site for your particular model. However I would NOT recommend you attempt to do this if your machine is still under warranty.
