Hello,

I have 8gb RAM on my laptop, and I wanted to upgrade to 16gb.

Unfortunately, there's not much information on my exact model (R3T5) online, and it seems A515-44 isn't specific enough, because there are differences.

I bought a Crucial 8gb stick, hoping to insert it into an empty ram slot on the motherboard, like I saw a video of someone doing with their A515-44.

My motherboard doesn't have a free ram slot, and has a 4gb stick that I can see - and must have a 4gb stick somewhere that I can't see.

1) Can I take out the 4gb stick and replace it with the 8gb? For a total of 12gb? Does it matter that they would be different gb sticks?

2) Can I do the same with 16gb? So 4 + 16 = 20gb?

Here's the 8gb ram stick I have bought:

Crucial CT8G4SFRA266 8 GB (DDR4, 2666 MT/s, PC4-21300, SODIMM, 260-Pin)

Thank you

You have one soldered irreplaceable 4GB RAM socket on the mainboard and one replaceable RAM socket which is filled with 4GB replaceable DDR4 module for 8GB. You can replace the 4GB module with the 8GB module for a total of 12GB RAM  or yes with a 16GB module for a total of 20GB RAM. Jack E/NJ

Hi Jack, thanks for the response.

I am wondering if it is even beneficial for me to upgrade the RAM and lose dual channel functionality? I am finding mixed answers through my research.

What would be my best option from a perfomance perspective:

    1) Stick with 8gb ram (2x 4gb)
    2) Upgrade to 12gb ram (1x 4gb, 1x 8gb)
    3) Upgrade to 20gb ram (1x 4gb, 1x 16gb)

Not too much practical difference between dual & single channel functionality.  And unless you have RAM intensive apps or insist on having 10-20 programs all running at the same time, not much need for more than 8GB. You might get a 0.1GB bump  in shared VRAM for each GB you add. Jack E/NJ

Do you know what ram mhz the system has, is it 2400mhz or 2666mhz?

The mainboard bus operates at up to 1333MHz,  so 2667MHz DDR4 or higher sodimms are recommended. https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/acer/aspire-a515-44
