Concerning the Aspire V5-531 laptop, which would be cheaper & easier:
1. Replacing the hard drive & adding new memory?
2. Buying a new laptop?

    Buy a new laptop.

You are not getting BIOS updates and driver updates --- which causes big problems in the Windows 10 force updating cycle world.
  • Hi,
If it's in good shape and you don't need more than 8GB RAM, I would suggest you upgrade memory up to 8GB  and replace the HDD with a 2.5" Samsung SSD.
    Memory: 2x4GB DDR3 1333/1600MHz

Memory and drive are obviously cheaper, and the drive at least will make a huge improvement. What you use it for defines whether those improvements are enough.

I found out that replacing the hard drive & upgrading the memory won't help the laptop's very slow & sluggish performance, the CPU is just old & slow.
So I am going to buy a new laptop.

Related question: What type of hard drive is in the Acer Aspire V5-531?
    The S/N is: NXM2CAA001XXXXXXXXXXXX
    The SNID is: XXXXXXXXXX
    The P/N is: NXM2CAA001
I want to use the hard drive as an external drive for the new laptop & want to make sure I get the correct enclosure.
I saw & like this one, but not sure if it's a good fit.

Replacing the drive with a SSD would actually be a huge improvement in speed, especially when loading the OS, but you can only do so much. The existing drive is a 2.5" SATA, so drive cases are pretty easy to come by.

Luckily, the laptop is not running Windows 10.  I turned that off completely, the owner didn't want it.
