I would like to convert my long ago Sony camcorder 8mm films to a hard drive or USB stick via my above laptop. Is anyone familiar with what sort of leads etc I would need to do this? I have seen some on various sites with what looks like the correct Sony red and yellow output plugs on one end and a scart plug on the other but don't want to buy in case this is not correct or I need other drives etc.
Any advice appreciated.

What you need is a video capture device. Normal colors are red and white for audio and yellow for video. I'm not sure if Sony met those standards, so double check. You basically play the tapes with the camcorder and capture them to video files on the computer. The Elgato capture devices are the highest rated, but since the COVID-19 stuff has started they can be a little tough to find. It seems everyone wants to do it...

Thank you so much for this information. On my really quite old camcorder it seems to have a slot in yellow for video out and a slot which looks black inside for audio out but I know I have in the past used a cable to connect and play it through the TV with yellow and red ended Jacks and it seem to project onto the screen fine. The camcorder is a TR350E from around '95 so very old and I think the worry is it will fail soon and my babies early videos will no longer be accessible. I will have a look out for your suggested device. Once again, many thanks.

I bet the audio is mono, not stereo. Stereo plus are white and red, so you only have one side.
