Back in 2016 when Microsoft offerred free Windows 10 upgrades I upgraded my Acer S3-391. After the upgrade I could not get a network connection as no wifi networks were shown. I tried various Atheros drivers via USB sticks but none worked. In the end I had to roll back to windows 7 and the wifi has worked fine ever since. As Windows 7 i EOL now I tried to upgrade to windows 10 again. The same thing happened, so instead of doing an upgrade I tried a clean install. The same situation occurred, eventhing worked but no wifi networks listed. The Atheros drivers reports its working in device manager and will switch on/off, but still no networks listed.

The drivers reports the module as an Atheros AR5BMD222.

Anyone had this problem and solved it? as I can't find any solutions but can't believe no one is running windows 10 successfully on this ultrabook?

Thanks.

The Qualcomm Atheros AR5BMD222 (also known as the AR9462) WiFi/BT 2.4-5G/4.0 BT card is an excellent and very reliable card. I’ve used it in an Aspire V3-571G and with Win-10 since release and including with the latest Win-10 20H2 and for many years without any problems. What I would suggest is that you get the latest Win-10 WiFi/BT drivers from this site for the WiFi driver version 10.0.3.462 file name win10-10.0.3.462-whql.zip from here: https://www.ath-drivers.eu/download-driver-for-Atheros-chipset-with-id-76-and-Windows10-64bit.html and the BT driver version 10.0.3.14 file name bt-10.0.3.14-win1064.zip from here: https://www.ath-drivers.eu/download-driver-for-Atheros-chipset-with-id-78-and-Windows10-64bit.html

Uninstall your previous drivers and update to these appropriate WiFi and BT drivers as I’ve never had any problems with the Qualcomm Atheros AR5BMD222 ever, also and if the card does not activate after these software is installed then do this > after rebooting and logging into Win-10 and your WiFi/BT is not active then press either the > F3 key or the > Fn/F3 keys together to activate the WiFi/BT, simple. The caption below is of Device Manager in Win-10 with the Atheros AR5BMD222 and this has worked for years 100%. Also, see this review of the Acer Aspire S3-391 here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Acer-Aspire-S3-391-53314G52add-Ultrabook.81619.0.html as there are certain problems with the communication part of the Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Wi-Fi module but it should work.

Thanks for the reply. I got and tried the drivers you linked but still no luck. This is a very strange problem as the drivers think they are all working. The radio switches on and off ok using the control panel and the F3 key. It just reports that it can't find any accesspoints. I'm switching the W7 drive out for another with a clean windows 10 install/ all windows updates applied. and then loaded the above drivers.

The network is connected as I'm using a USB->eth to allow me to get updates/drivers etc. When this is removed I just get the globe symbol instead of a wifi symbol and list of networks.

I'm wondering if its to do with this vwifibus driver as thats a microsoft one. This screen shot is before I installed the above drivers (hence the athw8x.sys instead of athw10x.sys).

Its really frustrating as I replaced the S3 screen recently and have an SSD so the laptop performs well. I've reverted the drive and am writing this from W7 using the S3 with wireless atheros hardware working fine! There was a win10 command prompt command that show the same empty list so its not a UI issue. Some wifi
