Aspire A515-52G won't turn on

Hi everyone,

Last night my laptop will not turn on. The blue light on the side comes on for a few seconds, then turns off, no fans start of anything like the laptop is trying to start.

I searched the forum a tried the following:
1. Battery reset button underneath the laptop, hold for 20 secs
2. Hold power button for various lengths of time with power supply disconnected
3. Hold a few keys and press the power button

The orange light comes on when I plug in the power supply so don't imgine that it's a problem with that.

Is this a battery issue? I have not noticed any issues with the battery performance and generally allow the battery to fully charge and discharge.

If anyone could assist, that would be much appreciated.

  • When you reset the battery, did you leave the notebook off for 10 minutes?

    It doesn't strike me as a battery issue, the circuit in charge of handling it seems to be working (there's an orange LED lighting up with the adapter is plugged in). It is probably a long shot but, you haven't opened the laptop right? I've seen that happen when the heatsink is too tight around the CPU, some are picky like that.

    There's nothing off the top of my head that could help you right away, what I'd do in your case would be to disassemble the laptop and then connect just the essentials, see if there's any change. At first without removing the heatsink, then re-seating it (if I get there I'd probably replace the thermal compound between the two).

    It may sound daunting if you've never done it, but it's not too hard and I'm sure there are already video guides even for your particular model that could help you on how to proceed. I can't think of anything else other than triaging the components I'm afraid given what you have already tried.

    Taking it to a service center or repair shop is always an option, but I'd first go at it myself.

    Yes tried that and does not change anything

    I have opened it up. Removed the battery, HDD, ram, speakers and USB ports all one at a time and always to the same effect. Is there anything else to try except a repair shop?
  • Is your notebook under warranty? Is there a button similar to this on the motherboard?

    No my notebook is no longer under warranty. It's still only 18 months old though. 

    I have one piece base and the only button I saw on the motherboard was the battery reset one or is that the one shown here? Mines is also accessible via a hole in the base.


  • OK! But did you dismantle the ram compartment, to check for that button I mentioned earlier?

    Some machines beep when they're turned on without RAM, but that's not a diagnosis step nowadays because it's not guaranteed if it doesn't have an internal speaker (those that beep).

    I'm afraid I can't think of anything else, perhaps try to loosen up the screws that hold the heatsink to the motherboard (just a bit, half a turn for example) to see if it powers on like that. If it doesn't, fixing it may be expensive if at the repair shop technicians determine replacing the motherboard is the only solution.

    Depend on the time the technicians want to spend on it and their ability. Maybe they find a component that has failed and are able to replace it without replacing the whole board, but schematics of the motherboard are not readily available and those kinds of fixes can't usually be done at home. They'd need to probe the machine and hope to find the problem :(.

    I have the same problem. When I try to turn on my laptop it simply turns on the LED for 5 seconds and then immediately turns off without any other event, which makes me believe that it is a defect on the board
