Hi,
I was add second drive to the My  notebook Acer Aspire A315-56-38W0.
My first drive is nvme 256G with Ubuntu 20.04 installed.

Second drive is SSD type drive 120 GB.

I can see second drive in the BIOS, but I can't see it in System.
Some time, if I change second drive type to spinned HDD, Ican see both drives.

What's wrong?

If its' a 2.5" form factor 120GB SSD, nothing is wrong. It's the equivalent of a mechanical  spinning 2.5" HDD only it's a non-mechanical 2.5" SSD Jack E/NJ

Drives  form-factors(2.5'') and interfaces (SATA) are same.
Ubuntu has see HDD, but SSD can't. (((
At same time SSD working fine in Windows.

    (1) What is brand & model of 2.5" SSD?
    (2) What is 2.5 SSD partitioning scheme (GPT or MBR)?
    (3) What is 2.5 SSD format NTFS, FAT32 or exFAT.
    (4) Does live gparted USB see 2.5 SSD?

    Seems, problem solved itself.
Two hours and few system restart later, the SSD drive appeared in Ubuntu as sda.
It is very strange but it is true.

We have the same problem, and it hasn't solved for us.

RealVoland What's the brand of your SSD?

For some reason likely due to the BIOS firmware, the ubuntu installer refuses to recognize sdb or hdd1 for some ACER models. The only solution so far has been to install a sda or HDD0 drive. I expect that either a future BIOS firmware update and/or an installer update will resolve this issue. Jack E/NJ

If the SSD is not listed in the BIOS INFORMATION  tab, then it is not connected or not getting power again. Jack E/NJ

    Hi,
No problem with BIOS. SSD always still there.

At now, after power off/on SSD has appear again.

Is it hardware problem? Or, maybe, sometimes Ubuntu loss SSD by unknown reason.

I will try to change this SSD with another one.

If you have a fast startup or fast boot option enabled in the BIOS Main tab, disable it. Jack E/NJ

OMG!! Are you not turning it off or on? Are you putting it to sleep by closing the lid?. We already know here that if you put it to sleep and after that if you resume, then second hdd/ssd shows up. I thought you found some other solution. Or is it something else?

    Hi!
Is it right when disk availability depending on laptop switch on/off/sleep/wake modes sequence?
When I using Windows, that disk is always present.
When I using Ubuntu 20.04 that disk appearing as it wish.

If it works as it should in Windows, then you can be confident that it is  NOT a hardware issue!. Ubuntu installers still have default hardware detection issues with UEFI BIOS firmware specifically designed for the Window operating system. This is especially so when factory hardware configurations are modified by the users.  These issues will eventually be addressed by the Ubuntu kernel contributors. But until then you will likely have to work around the deficiency by sudo modifying one or more CONF or EFI files in the terminal. If you're using a generic ubuntu 20x install, I suggest that you post the issue on the Ubuntu forums.  If you're using a ubuntu distro such as LinuxMint20x, then post on the distro forums. I'm using LinuxMint myself and have found the Mint installers and forums to be superior to the generic Ubuntu versions. Jack E/NJ

Sleep/resume sequence - Yes. In windows everything works perfectly. Works for many users.

Not hardware issue but it seems to be Bios problem because no other model of laptop with any make even the 10th gen has reported these problems. I searched the net. Nothing over there except this particular model of Acer.

BIOS/UEFI is software only. Hardware is fine. Also, it's happening with all Linux distros and on kernels up to 5.9.1. :(

I have already reported the problem here :
    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209419

@Everyone: If you are facing same problem in your acer a315-56, please do post comment on the above link with your config and email id.

    Thanks.

So here is a Solution which worked for me. I downloaded old Windows 10 ISO from official windows website. Version 1507 to be precise.

I reinstalled the Windows in AHCI mode. After Installing windows and after first boot, I instantly went to Install Linux (Manjaro Linux). Instead of Dual Booting I installed Manjaro on the whole hard disk.
In case you dont want to reinstall, Add nvme ssd, Linux detects it easily.
