Hi,

I have been trying to fix a relative's laptop for some time now, the touchpad is not working. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 315-21 which is approximately 2 years old, AMD A6-9225.

In April, a Windows 10 update caused the touchpad to stop working. The buttons on the touchpad still work, however there is no scrolling. Basically, if I do not touch anything, the computer boots into the login page with no cursor visible. To use the computer, I am currently using an optical mouse plugged into the USB to be able to use the computer. If I move the mouse, the cursor becomes visible again, otherwise the cursor disappears.

Please see attached screenshots showing the drivers installed etc.

I have tried the following:

-          FN +F7 to toggle on/off of touchpad.

-          Unplugged all peripherals, including the optical mouse.

-          Adjusted the two-finger scrolling settings, adjusted the touchpad sensitivity settings.

-          Changed in the BIOS touchpad from basic to advanced and vice versa.

-          Taken out the battery and checked the touchpad is properly connected.

-          Reset the computer twice (once retaining the files, then also totally wiping the computer).

-          Uninstalled and reinstalled the Synaptics and Elan drivers (I notice the Acer website says ‘Before installing the Touchpad driver, please install the Serial I/O driver first.’; however I don’t see how this is relevant to my issue, as the processor is AMD and not Intel.

None of the above has worked. I want to avoid sending the computer back to Acer, as cannot be without the computer for some time. Because it happened straight after the windows update, I suspect it is not a hardware issue.

I am out of options and ideas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

Try uninstalling whichever driver is in DeviceManager now. Exit Device Manager without reinstalling anything. Then open Control Panel. Search 'button'. Click 'change what the power buttons do' in left pane. Click 'change settings that are currently unavailable'. Scroll down and uncheck the box for fast startup. Shut down Windows normally. Turn it back on. Jack E/NJ

OK. Try iobit's DriverBooster freeware to see if it'll pick up anything new. Jack E/NJ

All drivers are up-to-date. I also since tried resetting the battery, with no success for the touchpad. I am thinking of updating the BIOS - would this be a bad idea?

Driver Booster scan showed all drivers are up-to-date.

Not a bad idea. Might be worth a try. BUT unlike Windows device driver updates, a failed BIOS update risks irreversibly bricking the machine. BUT on the other hand it would be a lot faster & less cumbersome than the two Win10 update recovery options I have in mind to rule in or rule out a touchpad hardware issue. Two opposing BUTS. Your decision.  :)   Jack E/NJ
