I'm planning to upgrade existing QCA9377 wifi card inside my Aspire 5 A515-51G-50AC laptop with either Intel Wireless AC 9260 or Intel Wireless AC 8265 but worried if they're not compatible. My router is Tenda AC18 AC1900 on a 500mbps internet connection.

Search for "FMINT 3168.NGWG" yields this Intel AC 3168 card.
Intel Wireless AC 9260 & Intel Wireless AC 8265: incompatible.

A little late but I figured I'd chime in here as I have nearly the exact question and setup as stormcruze here.  My question is WHY is it incompatible? The card fits and matches the CPU requirement. Do you mean unsupported?  That's a different thing.

If anybody here has a very specific reason why it won't work at all, let me know.  Otherwise I'm probably going to give the AC9260 a go.

I've been having some weird issues with this and I'm wondering what the heck it is.  I've narrowed it down to the card on here and I want to swap it out and see if I get any improvements.

    Hi URButASnack2Me,

So I bought the AC 9260 back then and installed it. At first Wifi worked but Bluetooth didnt. After searching the solution found was shielding the two pins as in the picture using tape. I can confirm it works on my model Aspire 5 (A515-51G-50AC).

Wow man that is so crazy.  Thanks so much for responding, you saved me a lot of searching time.  Already purchased the 9260.

The reason I'm actually doing this is because I'm trying to stream games from my host computer and this device causes the host's steam client to crash and I lose connection in the middle of a game.  It's the only device it does this on.  Actually I've even used the Acer here and just used CAT6 and that's fine.  My Android phone works fine, and my steam link works fine.  It's gotta be this.  If it's not then I have no idea what it could possibly be.  I thought maybe it was just my crappy AC wifi router that I got with FiOS so I got myself a Tenda AC18 and that didn't change anything.  I even tried tomato and merlin on it.  So frustrating.

Works like a charm my dude, thanks again.  That is a VERY tiny thing to put tape on.  Luckily I have a pretty decent electronics servicing setup, but this would be hard for your average Joe to do.  Now I'll test to see if this wifi card handles streaming better than that qualcom it came with.

You're welcome. Glad I could help. I don't have the slightest idea as to what those pins do but I have no issue with the card for 2 years now.

Well it didn't solve my Steam streaming issues sadly after some testing.  Back to the drawing board. :(

What exactly the setup that made Steam crashed ? Is it only when connected with wifi ?
I have no experience with Steam Link but I can give few suggestions:
    - Use 5ghz band
    - Update card driver
    - Update router firmware
    - Turn off antivirus and firewall
    - Move closer to router

Also you might want to look at the Steam Link FAQ.

All of those things were tried first.  I know you gotta ask though.  The driver was the first thing I did once I installed this new card.  Actually I think it was part of the instructions to NOT use the built-in drivers from windows update.  Router firmware is currently Merlin, tried Tomato, stock as well of course.  I don't bother with AV/FW on this laptop, anything I do is typically going to be in a virtual if I don't explicitly trust it.  I've also basically sat on top of the router.  All the basics were done.  I didn't go slapping in a new wifi card that needed a microscopic piece of tape placed on it because it was the first thing I thought of, ya know?

At first I thought maybe it was just the router I was using, but then again my phone does fine.  I tried CAT6 and it seems to work fine on the laptop so it's likely not a client software (steam) issue.  I got a new router, and this laptop still crashes steam.  I put a custom firmware on the new router thinking "oh maybe I need to configure burst frames or some such *****", but no combination of configurable things in Merlin, nor Tomato helped at all.  So then I kept moving down the troubleshooting chain to the wifi card.  Replaced it, still no dice.

I tried steam support as well and they wouldn't even bother with my dump files.  They just closed the ticket and never bothered, basically asking all the same questions you just did.  I've been an engineer a long time.  If I said I haven't pulled the ole "did you turn it off and on again" trick on somebody because I had no clue what the issue was I'd be lying.

That said - This new card is working fine with the instructions you linked.  Works great.  I don't wanna hijack this thread with this weird steam issue so I'll just say that the info you gave works for the question you posed originally.  At least you have another person that can say they upgraded their wifi card even though it wasn't supported.
